The Jordanian army announced the thwarting of an infiltration attempt and drug smuggling coming from Syrian territory.
The Jordanian Armed Forces stated on their official website late on Sunday, May 4, that they thwarted an attempt to infiltrate and smuggle “large quantities” of narcotics coming from Syrian territory.
The Jordanian army reported a statement from an official source (not named) who said that in coordination with border guard forces, security agencies, and the Anti-Narcotics Department, a smuggling operation from Syria was disrupted, and clashes with the smugglers occurred.
He added, “Rapid reaction patrols were dispatched, and rules of engagement were applied, which led to the smugglers fleeing into deep Syrian territory.”
The Jordanian army also said that after intensifying search and inspection operations in the area, they found “large quantities” of narcotics, without specifying their exact volume.
It pointed out that Jordanian forces would work to protect the borders from smuggling activities.
The Syrian authorities have not commented on the ongoing activity related to drug smuggling towards Jordan, and they have held numerous meetings with the Jordanian side to discuss smuggling operations.
Jordan deals sensitively with movements opposite its borders from the Syrian side, especially as Syrian territory has become a continuous threat due to the intensity of smuggling operations previously sponsored by the former regime towards the Gulf countries through Jordan.
On April 4 of last month, the Jordanian army announced the arrest of two individuals attempting to illegally infiltrate from Syria into Jordanian territory.
The Jordanian Armed Forces stated on their official website at that time, quoting a responsible military source, that the northern military area thwarted an infiltration attempt by three people coming from Syrian territory illegally.
On January 12, Jordan stated that its army engaged with armed groups of smugglers attempting to cross the northern border into Jordan from Syria.
Jordanian media outlets, including the Ammon agency, reported that border guard forces clashed with groups attempting to cross the northern border within the responsibility area of the eastern military zone.
On December 23, 2024, the Jordanian Foreign Minister visited Syria and met with transitional Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and his Syrian counterpart, Asaad al-Shibani, where they discussed shared goals, including combating drug smuggling and fighting terrorism.
Following the fall of the Assad regime, the new Syrian authorities discovered warehouses and manufacturing facilities, as well as quantities of narcotics in security and military sites belonging to the former regime, among them security branches and the Fourth Division of the regime’s army, which was led by Maher al-Assad, Bashar’s brother.
