United Airlines just made major cuts to dozens of regularly scheduled flight paths.
Following a myriad of disruptions at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport this past week, the airline has officially canceled 35 roundtrip flight paths operating out of the New York City-area airport, effective immediately.
The company's CEO, Scott Kirby, faulted “long-simmering” challenges for the decision, per the Associated Press, also noting that more than one-fifth of Newark’s traffic controllers reportedly “walked off the job” amid technology and equipment failures that caused countless flight delays, cancelations and diversions.
“This particular air traffic control facility has been chronically understaffed for years and without these controllers, it’s now clear — and the FAA tells us — that Newark airport cannot handle the number of planes that are scheduled to operate there in the weeks and months ahead,” Kirby acknowledged in an open letter to customers.
It's unclear at this time which flights were affected by the cuts, but it is estimated to represent about 10 percent of the round-trip domestic flights that were being operated by the airline out of Newark.
United is not the only airline making potentially unpopular decisions in an effort to survive an incredible turbulent time in air travel. Southwest recently upset travelers with a huge change to a long-standing policy, while United previously retired several pricy aircraft earlier than planned—and warned travelers of more cuts to come.
