IPL 2025 is already in it’s final stages, where is has become quite clear, as to what teams to go ahead in the tournament. RCB, GT, PBKS and MI could be the ones, with DC being the dark horses. So, it is only fair that we start looking at the next assignment for Team India — the England tour, starting from June 20. And also discuss the players, who could make it to the team in England.
But, before we go further and discuss the names of the players, it is important to understand, that this selection is purely based on assumptions. Firstly, there are going to be a few certainties in the India squad for England, while some might retain the place from the team for Australia tour. So let’s have a look at that.
Rohit Sharma, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, Sarfaraz Khan, Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, Tanush Kotian, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, Prasidh Krishna.
Rohit Sharma to Lead, Batting Remains Largely the Same
While there were a few reports earlier that there was a chance that Rohit Sharma might not go to England, but slowly it’s become clear, that he will continue to lead the Test side, despite poor form in Tests. Along with him batting mainstay, Virat Kohli will be there for sure, followed by the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel, Rishabh Pant, and Shubman Gill.
NO Sarfaraz Khan, Abhimanyu Easwaran; Karun Nair Misses Spot
The duo did not get a chance in Australia, especially when the Indian batting was suffering and there is no reason why they should be picked now. Interestingly, there were a lot of talks about Vidarbha batter Karun Nair being included for the Test series, but he does not make the cut. For the record, in 9 VHT matches last season, he had scored 779 runs at an average of 389. In Ranji Trophy, he had scored 863 runs in 9 matches as well.
Toss Up Between Devdutt Padikkal & Sai Sudharsan
This one is a difficult pick. In the Ranji Trophy, Sai Sudharsan had scored 304 runs in three matches, at an average of 76. While Padikkal, who was there in Australia too, did not play the tournament last time. What might work in Sudharsan’s favour is, his current form in IPL 2025 — where he is the leading run-getter, having scored 504 in 10 matches. He could serve as an opening back up to Yashasvi and Rohit.
Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami to be Used in Tandem
32 wickets in 5 matches for Bumrah in the BGT, and he is the first pick in any Indian team. Although he is coming back after an injury, he plays ahead of any other spinner. The only caution that the team would need to take is — he can’t be used for all 5 matches, or his injury could resurface again. So, Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, who is also returning from an injury, will play in tandem.
The other pacers will be — Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, and Mohammed Siraj. The latter two have been excellent in the IPL. Prasidh is the purple cap holder with 19 scalps in 10 matches, while Siraj has 14 in 10. They will have to play at least 4 matches of the five match series in England.
Harshit Rana vs Shardul Thakur?
Harshit Rana with 11 wickets in 10 matches in IPL, hasn’t been at his best. IN BGT he had six wickets in two matches. Perhaps, someone like a Shardul Thakur could be picked, who has a happy knack of picking wickets, and also can chip in with runs lower down the order. He has 12 wickets in 9 matches in the IPL. As far as his batting is concerned, he has three fifties in England.
Jadeja, Axar Patel, & Washi Easy Picks
Kuldeep is generally preferred in Tests, especially abroad, but he can be a total asset for the team. Ashwin’s departure has made way for another spinner — and that brings Axar Patel in the mix. And Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar retain spots from the previous Test series. So, this was a pretty simple one.
In all likelihood India will go with a squad of 15, and an additional three players as reserves, which is the case usually.
Rohit Sharma (c), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant (WK), Shreyas Iyer, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Sai Sudharsan, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj, Mohd. Shami, Shardul Thakur, Prasidh Krishna.
