NOCO Humane CEO Judy Calhoun to retire after 17 years of ‘transformative’ leadership

NOCO Humane will enter a new leadership chapter later this year with longtime CEO Judy Calhoun’s retirement.

Jo Tatti, chair of NOCO Humane’s board of directors, considers Calhoun’s 17 years at NOCO Humane “nothing short of transformative,” according to the organization’s news release.

Since 2008, Calhoun has guided NOCO Humane, formerly known as the Larimer Humane Society, through immense growth and has extended its impact across Northern Colorado. Her work made NOCO Humane a regional leader in animal welfare.

During her tenure, she executed a successful “Yes on 200” campaign to fund construction of a new, state-of-the-art shelter in Loveland and expand services into Weld County to increase capacity to serve more animals,  the release said.

Another career highlight happened when she boosted NOCO Humane’s long-term financial health, reaching a more than 660% increase in managed investments, according to the release. Her stewardship has ensured “financial stability, resilience and capacity” to serve the Weld and Larimer counties for years to come.

“She has led with expertise, integrity and an unwavering commitment to the animals and people we serve,” Tatti said in the release. “We are grateful for her years of service, and we are committed to finding a leader who will honor her legacy and continue moving NOCO Humane forward.”

The board has formed a transition committee, led by board member Ena Sawhney, a talent management expert, to ensure a seamless transition into new leadership. The board will begin a national search for the next CEO in four to six weeks.

Calhoun will continue to serve as CEO throughout the process to ensure a “stable and successful handoff” of responsibilities. The NOCO Humane team plans to celebrate Calhoun before her departure in the coming months.

“It has been the privilege of my professional life to serve this organization,” said Calhoun. “I am incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together — as a team, as a community and as advocates for animals. I look forward to seeing NOCO Humane continue to grow and thrive in its next chapter.”
