Mets rob Diamondbacks of hit after hit in hard-to-believe defensive inning

Arizona Diamondbacks Randal Grichuk, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Eugenio Suarez smoked three baseballs over 100 mph in spots where at least two must’ve fallen or gotten through, right?

Instead, the New York Mets’ defense executed three straight highlight plays to gift David Peterson an unlikely 1-2-3 fourth frame. New York led 7-0 at the time, and three straight D-backs hits would have at least cut into that lead and gotten something going.

The Mets defeated the Diamondbacks 8-3 to open a three-game series at Citi Field.

Grichuk led off and ripped a one-hopper to the left side. Third baseman Mark Vientos dove to his glove side and got a piece of the baseball, popping it up. Shortstop Francisco Lindor was in the right place at the right time and back-handed the ball in the air. Lindor fired a strike to first to retire Grichuk with plenty of time to spare.

Gurriel then crushed a slider deep into the left-center field gap. Tyrone Taylor was set up in right-center field and beelined it to the spot, making an extraordinary diving catch just shy of the warning track.

Peterson shots his arms in the air like the field goal was good.

Suarez followed with a 112 mph rocket, which Lindor back-handed on a slide and threw out Suarez. Suarez’ expected batting average on the play was .690. Grichuk’s was .630 and Gurriel’s .490, according to Statcast.

The Mets’ defense stymied the D-backs throughout the first six innings especially, as even first baseman Pete Alonso made three diving stops.

It was an extreme reminder of how defense can sway a ballgame, an area the Diamondbacks seek to sharpen after some early-season sloppiness.

Tuesday’s game was not close, but it could have been. New York’s defenders did not let it, at least early on — they made mistakes late.

To be fair, the D-backs played some solid defense on Tuesday night — a leaping catch by second baseman Tim Tawa stands out — just without so many web gems.

The Diamondbacks (15-14) scored one run off Peterson in five innings despite recording five hits and at least five more could-have-been hits. Arizona moved to 2-6 this season when facing a left-handed starting pitcher.

    Eduardo Rodriguez hit around

Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez had been off a strong start this season entering Tuesday with a 4.40 ERA but much better peripherals metrics (2.87 expected ERA).

Not the case on Tuesday, as Rodriguez allowed eight earned runs in four innings at Citi Field, allowing home runs to Lindor, Starling Marte and Alonso. Six of his eight runs allowed came with two outs.

Rodriguez had not allowed at least eight earned runs in an outing since 2016 with the Red Sox, when Torey Lovullo was Boston’s bench coach before getting hired to manage Arizona nine seasons ago.

Ryne Nelson provided a bright spot, pitching four shutout innings of long relief.

    Citi Field: house of horrors

The D-backs entered Tuesday 4-17 at Citi Field since 2018 and 7-23 against the Mets overall in that span.

The Diamondbacks split a four-game set in Queens last season, and they will turn to Corbin Burnes and Zac Gallen to change their fortunes.

The Mets (21-9) are 13-1 at Citi Field this year, the best home start in franchise history. The Mets contributed to the horror theme of Citi Field with zombies hanging around for Walking Dead Night.

Arizona will host New York for three games next week, starting on Monday.

    Diamondbacks next game

First pitch on Wednesday is at 4:10 p.m.

Burnes will make his sixth start for the Diamondbacks. New York’s starter is officially to be announced, but left-hander Brandon Waddell will either start or pitch bulk innings.
