Three people were killed in a crash Wednesday afternoon north of Platteville when the driver of a GMC Yukon fleeing from sheriff’s deputies crossed into oncoming traffic, crashing into a Toyota 4Runner.
The GMC was heading north on U.S. 85 around 3 p.m., when the driver crossed into southbound traffic at Colo. 60 and collided head on with the 4Runner, according to a release from Colorado State Patrol. After the collision, both vehicles caught on fire, trapping everyone inside.
Both occupants of the GMC were killed, as well as the 57-year-old woman driving the 4Runner, according to the release.
Deputies with the Weld County Sheriff’s Office were pursuing the GMC as they believed it to be stolen because the license plate was confirmed as stolen, according to the release. The plate, however, did not match the vehicle. The GMC’s vehicle identification number was destroyed in the fire, so police are still determining whether the vehicle itself was stolen.
Troopers responded to the scene and attempted to separate the vehicles using a push bumper on one of the cruisers. They also attempted to put out the fire with extinguishers they carry in their vehicles.
One Weld deputy suffered minor injuries while attempting life-saving measures and was treated on scene. One state patrol cruiser was damaged in the effort to separate the vehicles, troopers say.
The Weld County coroner will release the identity of the three people killed after next of kin have been notified.
