Fast bowler Harshit Rana is missing the "aura" of Gautam Gambhir in the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) dressing room during the IPL 2025. The young cricketer admitted that there was a certain excitement that Gambhir's presence brought, adding that he is missing him personally in the tournament this year.
Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders have struggled to find form in the IPL 2025. The Ajinkya Rahane-led team is on the verge of being eliminated from playoff contention. To stay in the race, KKR must win their remaining five matches, with a loss ending their hopes of making it to the playoffs.
After struggling to qualify for the playoffs, Kolkata Knight Riders brought back Gautam Gambhir as the team's mentor for the 2024 season. The franchise, under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy, won last year’s tournament and secured their third title. Gambhir went on to become the head coach of Team India.
Dwayne Bravo, who played for Trinbago Knight Riders, took over as KKR's mentor for IPL 2025. The coaching staff is unchanged from the previous year, with Chandrakant Pandit and Abhishek Nayar still involved. Nayar, who was reportedly dismissed from India's support staff, rejoined the team mid-season.
There Was a Thrill Factor That I Miss a Little - Harshit Rana
Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Monday, Harshit Rana said that he misses the excitement Gautam Gambhir brought to KKR. However, Rana added that the team is still receiving the right kind of environment, with Chandrakant Pandit, Nayar, and Dwayne Bravo in charge.
“The support staff is basically the same, and even Nayar bhai is back. But yeah, there was a thrill factor that I miss a little - speaking just for myself, not anyone else. But it's nothing like that. It's all the same, Chandu sir, Nayar bhai, Bravo. We are getting the kind of environment we want,” Rana told reporters.
“There have been changes, of course, since Nayar returned because he has a very smart mind. He reads the game very well. And the Indian core of our team, he knows them very well. He only has helped develop them over many years. So, it helps us that he is back and it feels good,” he added.
Gautam Gambhir Has an Aura - Harshit Rana
Harshit Rana said that Gautam Gambhir's aura, which motivates and drives the team forward, is something he misses. Rana added that his comments weren’t personal.
"I wasn't talking about anything personal. But you also know, he (Gambhir) has an aura in the way he carries the team forward. I was just talking about that," said Harshit.
Harshit Rana was retained by Kolkata Knight Riders as an uncapped player ahead of IPL 2025. He has been one of KKR’s top performers in 2025. He is the joint-highest wicket-taker with 11 wickets from nine matches. However, Rana suffered a left elbow injury while attempting a catch against the Punjab Kings.
