Greg McElroy is optimistic about the partnership between Tennessee and quarterback Joey Aguilar for the 2025 season.
The Vols brought Aguilar in to replace Nico Iamaleava for the 2025 season. The former App State quarterback had a bit of a down year in 2024, but is a very experienced passer. McElroy sees Aguilar as a “bridge” to Tennessee’s young quarterbacks — Jake Merklinger and George MacIntyre.
“Skillset wise, [Aguilar] doesn’t have as much natural ability as Nico Iamaleava,” McElroy said. “That’s fine. This guy has played a lot of football. I think this is a great situation for Tennessee to bridge the gap to one of their talented freshmen.”

— Always College Football (@AlwaysCFB) April 25, 2025Aguilar has just 1 year of eligibility remaining, so the Vols’ QB of the future is either further down the depth chart or not yet on the roster. Merklinger was a 4-star prospect in the class of 2024 and attempted 9 passes last season as a true freshman. His passes came against Chattanooga and Kent State early in the year. MacIntyre is a Tennessee native who is just beginning his true freshman year. He was also a 4-star prospect coming out of Brentwood Academy.
Aguilar’s best season of college football came in 2023 when he completed 64% of his passes for 3,757 yards, 33 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions.
