(KRON/BCN) -- An 87-year-old woman struck by a hit-and-run driver in San Francisco's Western Addition earlier this week has succumbed to her injuries, police said Friday. The collision was reported at 8:46 p.m. Monday in the area of Fillmore and McAllister streets, where a vehicle struck the woman as she walked in a crosswalk, San Francisco police said.
The driver fled and remains at large. The victim was taken to a hospital and succumbed to her injuries there Friday, police spokesperson Allison Maxie said. Her name was not immediately available from the city's Medical Examiner's Office.
The pedestrian advocacy group Walk San Francisco said the case is the city's fourth pedestrian death of 2025. There have been two other pedestrian deaths on Fillmore in the last five years.
The group is calling on city elected leaders to adopt new policies aimed at reducing or eliminating traffic fatalities in San Francisco.
"We are heartbroken to learn of another life lost on our city's streets," Walk SF executive director Jodie Medeiros said in a statement. "Our hearts go out to the victim's loved ones and community."
"There are no additional signs here to indicate when to walk and when not to and you find that in almost every busy intersection in San Francisco," said city resident Mary Tramal.
"We should be paying attention to traffic accidents," said city resident Michael Nery. "(As) somebody walking around with a stroller a lot, that is the thing I think about, is the most likely way that my life can take a hard left turn."
Medeiros has been calling on the city to implement more speed reducers. San Francisco is part of a national movement called Vision Zero that aimed to reduce deaths to zero by the end of 2024.
"It's pretty straightforward, they are proven solutions," said Medeiros. "They've tested them over the last ten years. They have great evidence that this does reduce crashes so it's about really investing in that."
"To our administration, to our city's leaders, it's time," added Medeiros. "It's over 115 days since we don't have that, and that's what San Francisco really needs."
Medeiros praises the city for slow streets and daylighting but says without a new Vision Zero policy that roads are not safe.
"One person lost to traffic crash is one too many," said Medeiros.
Walk SF and other organizations are holding a rally on the steps of City Hall on Tuesday at noon.
