The dust will soon settle on the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. We have about 28 league matches combined with the four knockouts before the caravan moves to England for a five-match Test series. Mind you, it was 17 years ago when India last won a red-ball series in England. But in a five-match Test series, the wait has been continuing for over 92 years.
But what if we say the wait will continue for longer? India would need a miracle of sorts to get anything out of a tough Test series that beckons. Why so? Well, the reasons are multifold. The biggest one could be the dip in form for majorly all the Indian bowlers going into the summer season.
IPL 2025 fatigue & dip in form – bad news for India
The Indian players have been playing non-stop cricket so far in 2025. After a tiresome Australian Test tour, there was an 8-match white-ball series against England before the main ICC Champions Trophy 2025 came up. As soon as that ended in a superb fashion, the IPL 2025 is giving fans non-stop cricketing action. All this and we haven’t completed four months of 2025.
The bowlers are bound to feel hectic. Yes, there’s a considerable break between the IPL 2025 and the first England vs India Test, but the damage will be done. Most importantly, this year’s IPL hasn’t been kind to the Indian contingent. Yes, the likes of Prasidh Krishna and Arshdeep Singh have been fine. But what about the actual starters in England?
Cricket 11 mins Lions not enough, India will face India ‘A’ in Kent to prepare for England Test tourShami, Bumrah in worst phase for England tour?
It came as a huge surprise when Jasprit Bumrah fast-tracked his recovery to be fit for Mumbai Indians’ (MI) fifth game, a massive turnaround from reports that said he’d miss the majority of April. Nonetheless, the bottom line was that Bumrah is absolutely fine and pumped up. However, his performances have dwindled. The best bowler of this generation delivered an all-timer at IPL 2024 and at the BGT.
For him to sustain at that level for another five-match series would be something unthinkable. Bumrah’s IPL 2025 returns haven’t been great either. Yes, he has five wickets in as many games, but his usual rhythm hasn’t lauded fans as of yet. He’s averaging well over 30 – something you don’t associate with Bumrah.
Then comes Mohammed Shami, whose form is so bad that the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) dropped him altogether in their previous game. Shami, once the highest wicket-taker in the IPL from 2019 to 2023 with 106 wickets, has struggled in the IPL 2025. Despite being bought by SRH for Rs 10 crore, Shami has taken just 5 wickets in 7 games at an average of 52.20 and an economy rate of 10.8.
His ineffectiveness, especially with the old ball, has been concerning. Unlike other pacers who benefitted from the removal of the saliva ban, Shami hasn’t been able to replicate his past performances.
Cricket 11 mins Akash Deep’s struggles in IPL 2025 could close selection doors for India vs England Test seriesAkash Deep, Siraj ain’t better either
India would need the likes of Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep and Harshit Rana in England, where you’d expect seam bowlers to rule the roost. But then, their form hasn’t been great either. Siraj, who started the IPL 2025 with a bang, has seen a mini slump. In his first four games, Siraj took nine wickets and was perhaps the best pacer. But since then, he hasn’t been that impressive.
Straying down the leg, giving room to batters and not producing enough seam movement. In his last four games, Siraj has taken just three wickets at an average of 53.00 and at an economy rate of almost 10. At the same time, Akash Deep, who was extremely unlucky not to get many wickets at the BGT, has also made a return after an injury.
Just like Shami, even Akash Deep was dropped due to poor form. He played four games for the Lucknow Super Giants but managed to take just three scalps. It is not just that; Akash was wayward in many senses, leaking runs at 12.25 and at a poor average of 49.00.
