Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois rematch date pushed back due to scheduling clash

Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois’ much-anticipated rematch has been pushed back a week.

The heavyweight titans were reportedly finalising a deal to duke it out at Wembley Stadium on July 12.

However, the target date has been changed to July 19 to avoid clashing with a New York City Ring Magazine card featuring Edgar Berlanga vs Hamzah Sheeraz and Shakur Stevenson vs William Zepeda on the night of their originally proposed date.

That is according to Ring Magazine’s Mike Coppinger, who reports that the fight will still take place at the Home of Football in London.

Dubois retained his IBF heavyweight title at Wembley last September by knocking out Anthony Joshua in the fifth round.

Usyk had unified the red and gold strap with the rest of the major sanctioning body belts at the back end of last year by beating Tyson Fury.

However, he was forced to relinquish the belt in order to pursue a second fight with ‘The Gyspy King’.

As a result, Dubois was elevated from interim to full IBF world champion and will now get a crack at the undisputed crown against Usyk this summer, provided the WBO Championship Committee votes to allow the fight to go ahead for their belt.

The WBO recently ordered WBO, WBA and WBC champion Usyk to defend his belts against WBO interim title holder Joseph Parker.

An exemption was then lodged earlier this month on behalf of Usyk and Dubois to allow their fight to come first.

WBO president Gustavo Olivieri told Sky Sports: “There is a petition before the Championship Committee to consider a Usyk-Dubois unification to consolidate the heavyweight championships.

“Therefore, upon an official ruling regarding this matter, we will publicly announce the official decision, including Parker’s mandatory status, if that be the case.”

Usyk won their inaugural encounter via ninth-round knockout, but was decked by a shot in the fifth stanza that divided the boxing world.

Some claimed that the shot, which decked Usyk for a lengthy stretch, was a legal body shot.

Meanwhile, others insisted it had strayed low.

Ultimately, the referee determined it was an illegal punch, and so Usyk was given five minutes to recover before rebounding to stop Dubois in the second half of the fight with a jab.

Dubois’ promoter Frank Warren, subsequently submitted an appeal to get the fight overturned, but the result was upheld.
