The University baseball team isn’t likely to spend too much time celebrating a win, of any kind, in April — a full month-plus before the spring season wraps up.
And, the Casey Miller-coached Bulldogs, are certainly well aware that state titles are decided in May, not April.
Nonetheless, the win University secured this past Monday could provide a good omen, if recent history is any indication.
The Bulldogs defeated longtime Patriot League rival Eaton 10-7 in Eaton.
That victory snapped a 12-game losing streak against the Reds and was University’s first win against Eaton since 2019.
Though the Bulldogs, no doubt, have a long way to go to secure their third Class 3A state title in eight seasons, it’s worth noting: the previous two times University defeated the perennial powerhouse Reds, the Bulldogs went on to win the state title.

A season later, the Bulldogs went 1-1 against the Reds, losing to Eaton early in the regular season but avenging that loss shortly before the postseason. University went on to repeat as the 3A champion.
In the four seasons after that, the Reds won a dozen consecutive games against the Bulldogs, winning the past four 3A state titles in the process. Those victories included a trio of Eaton victories over University in the state finals the past three years.
Though a win by either team, against the other, in April may not mean everything; it could be just the victory a team like the Bulldogs need to reinforce the belief that they’re capable of being the last team standing when the dust clears in late May.

One glance at CHSAA’s most recent Selection and Seeding Index for 3A baseball indicates it could once again be an active state tournament for local programs when the two-weekend affair takes place at the end of May.
Three of the top 5 teams in the index are local teams. University (13-3) is ranked first, Resurrection Christian (11-4) is fourth, and Eaton (11-5) is fifth. Colorado Academy (12-1) and Coal Ridge (14-2-1) are second and third, respectively. The index is used to help determine postseason seeding after the regular season concludes.
For those keeping score at home, Resurrection Christian is 1-0 in head-to-head matchups between the two teams this spring, while University is 1-1, and Eaton is 0-1.
Resurrection Christian defeated University 4-3 on April 8 in Greeley. The Cougars take on the Reds at 6 p.m. May 6 at the Future Legend complex in Windsor.
Speaking of rivalries…
The University-Eaton matchup isn’t the only heated rivalry that local prep baseball fans can look forward to in this latter part of the spring season.
At 7 p.m. May 8 at Butch Butler Field, Greeley Central will take on longtime intracity rival Greeley West in what will serve as the Spartans’ final game of the regular season. The Wildcats will have a pair of games against another rival, Northridge on May 10, followed by a date with Severance on May 12 to wrap up its regular season.
Before the Central-West game, the Spartans will honor their 1975 state championship team.
Greeley West has had the edge over the Wildcats throughout the years.
The Spartans have gone 8-2 in the past 10 meetings with Greeley Central. The two teams split a pair of games a season ago.
