Ange Postecoglou could still deliver European glory for Tottenham this season, but his future beyond that is far from certain.
It has been a testing season for the Australian in north London, whose Spurs side sit a lowly 16th in the Premier League table after their 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Monday.
The loss was Tottenham’s 18th this term, taking them to within just one of their all-time record of 19 – set in the 1993/94 and 2003/04 campaigns.
And their poor domestic form has put Postecoglou under increasing pressure, despite guiding his side to the semi-finals of the Europa League, where they will play Bodo/Glimt.
talkSPORT understands Spurs are likely to move on from the 59-year-old, even if he wins them the competition.
Several names have been touted as candidates to succeed Postecoglou, including recently-promoted Burnley boss Scott Parker, while chairman Daniel Levy is believed to be an admirer of Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna.
With all eyes on the Aussie, talkSPORT.com has taken a look at the favourites to take over at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Scott Parker
Scott Parker has lost just four games since taking charge of Burnley in July 2024GettyFormer Spurs midfielder Parker recently found his name thrown into the hat for the would-be vacancy by talkSPORT’s Jamie O’Hara.
Speaking on The Sports Bar, his ex-Tottenham teammate said :“I think I’d like Scott Parker at Tottenham, I think there’s something about him.
“I’ve worked with Scott, I’ve been in the dressing room with him and he is top drawer, he is a top bloke.
“His speeches are great, he was a brilliant captain, I’ve seen him as a Burnley manager and I like what he’s about.”
The Burnley head coach won promotion to the Premier League for the third time in his coaching career over the weekend, doing so having conceded just 15 goals in 44 matches.
With Postecoglou coming under fire for his lack of defensive strategy, the 44-year-old’s pragmatic approach could be welcome at Spurs.
Despite his impressive record in the Championship, previously guiding Fulham and Bournemouth to the top-flight in 2020 and 2022, Parker’s Premier League record is less convincing.
He is yet to finish a full campaign after promotion, departing the Cottagers in 2021 after their relegation back to the second tier, while he was sacked by the Cherries just four games into the 2022/23 season.
Kieran McKenna
GettyKieran McKenna has been in charge of Ipswich for over three years[/caption]Despite a tough season with Ipswich, McKenna is held in high regard at Spurs.
talkSPORT understands chief decision maker Levy is an admirer of the Northern Irishman, who previously spent seven years in north London as a youth team player, later returning as an academy coach.
After a three-year stint as assistant manager at Manchester United, McKenna got his big break when he was appointed as the Tractor Boys boss in November 2021, who were in League One at the time.
In his first full season in charge, the 38-year-old guided the club to a second-place finish to earn promotion to the Championship.
He followed this up with an even more impressive 2023/24 campaign as Ipswich finished as runners-up in the second-tier to seal their return to the Premier League after a 22-year absence.
McKenna’s heroics saw him named the Championship Manager of the Season, but he has had a much harder time of things this term.
With five games left to play, his side sit on the brink of relegation from the top-flight, but they have earned plaudits for being competitive in the majority of their games, which cannot be said of confirmed relegated sides Southampton and Leicester.
Andoni Iraola
Iraola has turned Bournemouth into European contenders, despite the Cherries being in the Championship as recently as 2022GettyBournemouth boss Iraola is another candidate high on Tottenham’s list of potential replacements for Postecoglou.
In March, talkSPORT reported that the Spanish coach would be Levy’s top target to take charge at the club, having impressed since his arrival at the Vitality Stadium in 2023.
After guiding the Cherries to a 12th-place finish in his debut season in English football, Iraola has taken his side to another level this term, who are well in the hunt for European qualification.
Bournemouth currently sit eighth in the Premier League table, with a place in either of next season’s Europa Conference League or Europa League a real possibility depending on the performance of English sides in Europe this season.
And it isn’t just in England where Iraola has impressed, having also won promotion to LaLiga with Rayo Vallecano in 2021, before keeping them up in each of the following two seasons in the top-flight.
With the 42-year-old combining results with an entertaining brand of football, Spurs could well see him as the man to take them forward.
Thomas Frank
Thomas Frank is the second longest-serving manager in the Premier League, behind Manchester City boss Pep GuardiolaGettyBrentford head coach Frank is also believed to be on Levy’s future managers shortlist, although his hefty release clause may put Spurs off.
After taking charge of the Bees in 2018, the Dane has taken the club from strength to strength, guiding them to the Premier League for the first time in the club’s history in 2021.
Since then, he has cemented himself as one of the league’s most impressive head coaches, having successfully kept the west London side in the top-flight.
Brentford remain in with an outside chance of European qualification this season, currently occupying 11th place in the league table.
Frank has found his name in the hat for a number of top jobs, previously being linked with the Man United vacancy in November.
He has also refused to rule out moving to a bigger club, telling talkSPORT ‘I’m open’ in October with regards to his future.
Marco Silva
GettyMarco Silva has managed in England since 2017[/caption]It is a similar story for Fulham manager Silva, who is thought to be among the main targets drawn up by Tottenham, but also has a sizeable release clause.
The Portuguese coach boasts more experience in English football than his fellow candidates, with the Cottagers his fourth club on these shores.
After impressing with Hull and Watford in the Championship, Silva got his break in the Premier League with Everton in 2018.
Although the move didn’t quite go according to plan, with the 47-year-old receiving his marching orders less than two years later, he has rebuilt his reputation at Craven Cottage.
After his appointment in 2021, Silva won promotion back to the top-flight in his first season in charge, going on to re-establish Fulham as a Premier League side in the years since.
After 10th and 13th place finishes in the last two seasons, the Whites are also in with a shot of European football next term.
They currently sit ninth in the league table, just a point behind Iraola’s Bournemouth.
