Festival season gets underway this weekend in San Jose

San Jose’s outdoor festival season gets underway this weekend with a couple of longstanding favorites: Nikkei Matsuri in the historic Japantown district and the SoFA Street Fair in downtown’s arty South First Area, with both taking place Sunday.

Nikkei Matsuri, which has been a celebration of Japanese American culture since 1978, will take place around the intersection of Fifth and Jackson streets, with four stages featuring different styles of music and dance performances, community food vendors and cultural displays of kimonos, origami, flower arrangements and kimekomi dolls.

The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the 40th annual Yu-Ai Kai Japantown 5K Fun Run starting at 9 a.m. Get more details and the full schedule at www.nikkeimatsuri.org.

SOFA SO GOOD: Fil Maresca, founder of the SoFA Street Fair, tells me that this spring’s edition will add a new element to go with the usual bevy of music, food and art. It’s the SoFA Bazaar, an open-air market offering donated clothing, household goods, artwork and other items.

That sounds like a pretty good deal already, but it’s actually better than it sounds. The SoFA Street Fair is free to enjoy, as always, and if you want to shop at the bazaar, you need only make a monetary contribution to the Bill Wilson Center, which helps at-risk youth in Santa Clara County. You’ll get a shopping bag to fill with whatever items in the bazaar strike your fancy. Anything left over at the end of the day will be given to the Bill Wilson Center.

“The SoFA Bazaar is about creating a space where giving and receiving happen side by side, without stigma or expectation,” Maresca said. “We want this to be a joyful, welcoming extension of the SoFA Street Fair’s creative and inclusive spirit.”

Not looking to shop? That’s fine. Just enjoy the 60-plus bands on 10 stages or the caravan of food trucks that’ll be parked on South First Street between San Salvador and Reed streets. The fair runs from 2 to 8 p.m., and you can see who’s playing where at sofaspring25.sched.com.

OUT AND ABOUT: San Jose’s Evergreen Valley College, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, is opening its campus Saturday for “Day on the Evergreen,” a community day with a lot of family-friendly activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. That includes an art booth, a pop-up planetarium and displays of classic cars and San Jose fire and police vehicles. The college’s soccer team will host a clinic at 1 p.m., and Girl Scouts will host an axe-throwing booth (still family-friendly, as they’re plastic axes). The campus is at 3095 Yerba Buena Road, and you can get more information at www.evc.edu/events.

Meanwhile, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) is hoping for a good turnout Saturday morning for its PanCAN Purple Stride Silicon Valley walk at Almaden Lake Park. Every year, the walk draws hundreds of people who have been affected by pancreatic cancer — survivors, family members, caregivers and friends — and so far has raised more than two-thirds of its goal of $475,000. The opening ceremony is set for 10 a.m. and the walk begins at 10:30 a.m.; you can still register for free at purplestride.org/siliconvalley.

TREASURE HUNT: Anybody who owns a home around here can tell you that maintenance ain’t cheap. Now imagine the place you’re taking care of was designed by renowned architect Julia Morgan and is more than 100 years old. If you’re a member of the Saratoga Foothill Club, you don’t have to imagine it because that describes the organization’s historic clubhouse.

This weekend, the women’s organization’s Historic Landmark Foundation is bringing back its Garage and Treasures sale to raise money for the clubhouse’s maintenance and preservation for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. The sale — which runs 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday — includes art, jewelry, home decor, plants and holiday decorations. Admission and parking are free at the Saratoga Foothill Club, 20399 Park Place in Saratoga, but be advised only cash and checks will be accepted for payment.
