Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) announced Thursday the sudden death of his daughter Molly McGovern, who had faced a “rare cancer diagnosis.”
In a joint statement with his wife Lisa McGovern and son Patrick McGovern, the congressman said that her death was unexpected.
“Even as she faced a rare cancer diagnosis, she did so with relentless courage, optimism, and tenacity — refusing to let her illness slow her down. She had just finished a semester abroad in Australia. She passed away unexpectedly in Italy while visiting a good friend and his family,” the family said in a statement.
Rep. McGovern, who is the top Democrat on the House Rules Committee, recalled in the family statement that his daughter “radiated pure joy.”
“She lit up every room with her beaming smile — full of laughter, endless warmth, and a sharp wit that could disarm you in an instant. She was unbelievably funny, fiercely loyal, and wise beyond her years,” the statement said. “Molly had a rare gift: She made everyone feel special, because she genuinely believed everyone was special. She treated people with compassion and kindness — always standing up for the underdog, and making fast friends wherever she went.”
The family added that Molly “will always be the soul of our family.”
McGovern’s statement was met with bipartisan condolences.
"Everyone in our family adored Molly and we were all inspired by her love for animals, her passion for sports and her ebullient compassion and care for friends, family and strangers," Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said in a statement.
Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) said on the social platform X: “There is nothing more precious than the gift of a child. It is hard to process and fathom the unbearable grief associated with their loss. Keeping the entire McGovern family in our prayers.”
McGovern is the second lawmaker this month to announce the death of a daughter. Last week, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) announced the death of his adult daughter.
