An absolute must-see is the upcoming “Quilts in Bloom” show at the Ukiah Valley Conference Center in Ukiah. This heretofore annual event is returning for the second year since the Covid pandemic shut everything down. The two-day show is sponsored by the Grapevine Quilter’s Guild and is truly a triumph of dedication and creativity.
Disclaimer: I am a quilter, and have entered pieces in this show over the years, but I am not a member of the Grapevine Guild. I just think this is by far the finest of any small town quilt show that I have ever seen. It even beats out many of the big-time national quilt shows in terms of presentation, originality and attention to detail.
Dee Pallesen, the show’s chairperson, is in her second year of organizing the event. She retired three years ago and told me, “I need something to occupy my time, so I jumped into the guild. I love the ladies… there are so many wonderful artists.” Dee herself is a quilter, focused entirely on doing traditional piecing with traditional fabrics.
Under Dee’s direction, the entire show is presented as a virtual stroll though a magnificent flower garden. First, there are the quilts themselves. Instead of hanging them on the usual sagging curtains, they are all solidly displayed on tall wooden quilt stands that were handmade for the guild. The wood lends the whole show a feeling of warmth, according to Dee. “The quilts are the main focus,” she says. “Because we can hang them so well they bring a good feeling to us.”
In addition to the proliferation of beautiful quilts, there are also several vignettes set up in each row to enhance the magic of the setting. The props all belong to a Grapevine member who is a collector. She creates each vignette from her own personal possessions, using antique spinning wheels, baskets, sewing machines, watering cans, crocheted bedspreads and flowers… among other things. Each scene is painstakingly set up to complement the quilts around it.

Entries were also open to the public, and there is a wide variety of modern and art quilts included.
“Quilts in Bloom” will be held at the Ukiah Valley Conference Center (200 S. School St. in Ukiah) on Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4. Show hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday. There is a $10 entry fee, which is good for both days for anyone who wants to revisit the show. All the proceeds go to support the many worthwhile projects of the guild.
