6 Southern California independent bookstores join first-ever Global Book Crawl

This week launches the Global Book Crawl, a new worldwide event that encourages you and all your friends to go from independent bookstore to bookstore buying books, meeting new people, exploring new shops, and buying even more books.

Even better? You don’t have to literally crawl across the globe to find books – though some book lovers would be fully prepared to do so, no doubt. Instead, from April 21-27, the event involves 300 bookstores in more than 70 cities across 20 countries.

Kyrgyzstan? Check. Lichtenstein? Yep. Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Fiji, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Spain, the United States and more? Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. And yes.

“The project is grassroots and bookseller-led, and its spirit is joyful, collaborative, and radically local, with a shared global heartbeat,” said co-founder Federico Lang, a bookseller in Málaga, Spain, in an email.

On the topic of book crawls, we’ve rhapsodized previously about Seattle’s epic 29-store marathon, but the San Diego Book Crawl has been main event in Southern California: It’s also happening this weekend, April 26-28. This book nerd won’t be there this weekend, but if I were, I’d be making sure to stop in at the just-opened Hey Books! Not only does it clearly understand when to use an exclamation point, but it also has a fun design sense.

And if you can’t be in San Diego – or Kuala Lumpur –  then we recommend taking part in the local San Gabriel Valley Book Crawl, which includes some of our favorite stores such as Black Cat Fables, DYM Books & Boba, Fables & Fancies, Matilija Lending Library, Octavia’s Bookshelf, and Underdog Bookstore.

Or just create your own crawl and visit one of the more than 80 independent Southern California bookstores on this map!

Not only does this sound fun, but we can also personally recommend the jaunt, as we covered nearly all of the stores in one afternoon as we wrote this story and this one, too.

And you better believe we’re ready, willing and looking forward to doing it all again.
