Former UNC football player Tylee Craft posthumously received the inaugural Eric Montross Public Service Award last week. The award was part of the Carolina Center for Public Service’s annual awards ceremony. Chancellor Lee Roberts and provost Chris Clemens presented the awards at a ceremony April 16.
Craft played for the UNC football team before receiving a cancer diagnosis in the spring of 2022. While battling the disease, Craft took part in causes such as Team Draft, the White Ribbon Project, LiveLung and the American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative. In addition, Craft remained an active member of the football program, inspiring his teammates with his courage and perseverance while undergoing grueling treatments. Craft received the 2022 Disney Sprit Award during his cancer fight, which honors “the most inspirational figure in college football.”
Craft died at age 23 last October, more than two years after his initial diagnosis. Former UNC head coach Mack Brown noted Craft far outlived the prognosis given to him by doctors. Tylee’s mother, September Craft, accepted the Eric Montross Award on his behalf at last week’s ceremony.
The award is named after former UNC men’s basketball All-American and radio announcer Eric Montross, who died from cancer in December of 2023. Montross was a benefactor of UNC Children’s Hospital through his annual Father’s Day Basketball Camp. He also funded the creation of a teen room and rooftop garden at the hospital. His widow, Laura, accepted a framed certificate in her husband’s honor at the ceremony.
