Ayush Mhatre & Vaibhav Suryavanshi ready to take over the IPL baton from MS Dhoni & Co.

The weekend couldn’t have been better. No one thought that the doubles headers on April 19 and 20 in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, would see us unearth two wonderkids like Ayush Mhatre and Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The latter made his IPL debut for Rajasthan Royals (RR) yesterday at the age of just 14.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi IPL debut to remember

Suryavanshi started his career with a first ball six to Shardul Thakur. Someone who has played Test matches in Australia and England. You might have thought, the IPL couldn’t get better. This was 8th standard kid going against players who have played international cricket for a decade.

Ayush Mhatre plays his first T20 match

As if that wasn’t enough, now we have a 17-year-old making his debut. Ayush Mhatre who hasn’t even played a T20 match until now, went on to score 32 (15) on his IPL and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) debut. This would have been the talk of the town, had Suryavanshi not made his debut a day prior.

    ???????? ??? ?????????? How about that for a start Ayush Mhatre's #TATAIPL career is up and away in some fashion #CSK 52/1 after 6 overs. Updates t.co/v2k7Y5sIdi#MIvCSK | @ChennaiIPL pic.twitter.com/UVvmdWotvY

Suryavanshi & Mhatre, future of the IPL

But we aren’t here to pit them against. These two players will be the superstars who will take the IPL forward. When the league had started in 2008, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid were the face of the league. But the ageing stars, couldn’t go on for long.

We are in the 18th edition of the IPL and now MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are the faces. But it’s time to pass the baton. All three have played in each season of the league. And here are Suryavanshi and Mhatre, who are 14 and 17 respectively. Even with their ages combined, they are younger than them by a distance.

These will be the stars, who’ll be the face of the IPL in years to come. Change is inevitable. And by looking at the talent emerging, IPL is in good hands.
