Report: ASU football, top 2026 commit Israel Briggs part ways as he takes other official visits

ASU football has parted ways with its top 2026 commit, tight end Israel Briggs, as he will take a tour of official visits to other power conference programs, Brandon Huffman of 247 Sports reported.

Briggs, rated by 247 as the No. 69 player and No. 6 tight end in 2026, initially committed to Arizona State in February over other offers that included UCLA, Oregon, Cal, Miami and Texas A&M.

The final three schools in that list are among the five destinations at which he has upcoming official visits, joined also by Michigan and LSU. An unofficial trip to Ann Arbor this past weekend set in motion the separation of Briggs and ASU.

The tight end was previously set to take an official visit to Tempe this weekend for the team’s fan fest, Huffman noted.

What kind of blow does losing Israel Briggs have on ASU football?

While Briggs was considered the best commit thus far for Arizona State in the 2026 class, he plays tight end, which is among the deepest positions on the team for 2025 and when looking beyond.

All-conference selection Chamon Metayer had 306 yards and five touchdowns to lead the group in 2024. He returns along with Cameron Harpole for what will be their fourth collegiate seasons, while Kentucky transfer Khamari Anderson is in position to have an impact in his third season.

The room also includes AJ Ia, the highest-rated true freshman among healthy players contributing this spring (quarterback Cam Dyer is coming off surgery from an injury sustained in his high school playoffs), who looks ready to make an immediate impact at 6-foot-6 and 255 pounds.

Then in Briggs’ own class, ASU holds a commitment from Hayden Vercher, who’s ranked as the No. 29 tight end. He’s now considered the program’s second-best commit in the class by composite ranking (No. 414) behind quarterback Jake Fette (No. 115).

The state of the position is in great shape thanks in part to Jason Mohns, who Kenny Dillingham hired as the tight ends coach when he was named head coach. Mohns had previously built up the Scottsdale Saguaro High football program to perennial dominance.

“For him, the ability to put in the amount of work it took for him to build that program up in high school, taking that same time and focusing it on seven dudes, it’s showing up,” Dillingham said on Friday of the successful transition Mohns has made. “Not just from the players that he’s getting to join our football team, but the way they play, the technique they play (with).”
