Former Colorado State wide receiver Tory Horton is healthy and ready to hear his name called in this week’s NFL Draft.
After a decorated collegiate career that ended prematurely, Horton is excited about his next opportunity.
He hopes his resume, along with his performance at the NFL combine and a pro day held earlier this month at Canvas Stadium, are enough for a team to take a chance on him.
Several draft experts predict him to go in the middle rounds, possibly as high as the third. The draft begins Thursday with the first round followed by the second and third rounds Friday and the final rounds Saturday.
Although his final season was cut short by a knee injury, Horton still had 2,620 receiving yards at CSU (sixth in program history) as well as 17 receiving touchdowns. He also scored on three punt returns and threw for a touchdown.
His combined CSU and Nevada receiving yardage was 3,615, which left him 35 yards from breaking the Mountain West all-time receiving yardage record held by CSU great Rashard Higgins.
“Somebody is going to get a steal when they pick him,” CSU head coach Jay Norvell said.
Norvell has coached Horton his entire collegiate career, first at Nevada and then in Fort Collins. Since being cleared to run and jump, Horton’s pre-draft preparation has been mostly positive.

However, at his pro day, he executed a 10-foot, 6-inch broad jump (which would have been 12th at the combine).
He competed in the cold and some snow at Canvas Stadium on April 3 in front of scouts from almost every NFL team. In addition to the broad jump, he also ran routes and caught punts, showing off the abilities Rams fans saw for two-plus years from the star receiver.
More than anything, he wanted to prove his knee injury was behind him.
“I feel really confident in my cuts and getting in and out of my breaks,” Horton said after his workouts.
One thing is certain: after missing half of his last season with CSU, he is ready to play again. He admitted having to watch the rest of the Rams’ season from either his bed or the sideline wasn’t easy.
He said he learned a lot from the experience and feels it helped him, especially mentally.
“I feel like it taught me a lot mentally,” Horton said. “It kind of taught me to, you know, be 110% locked in mentally, and, you know, just making sure you got all the mental reps and know film. I kind of took that to the next level.”
Norvell knows best what Horton is capable of and is looking forward to seeing his favorite player compete at the next level.
He has seen what he can do in college as he watched him grow from a freshman at Nevada to a senior at CSU, and he knows it can translate into success in the NFL.
His work on and off the field has proven that.
“He’s just a player that I’ve never had to worry about, and I think everybody’s known he’s been my favorite since I got him as a freshman,” Norvell said. “And I can’t really hide it, he still is. … I’m really excited for his opportunity.”
If Horton is drafted, he will be the third Ram picked in the past four years. Defensive end Mo Kamara was selected in the fifth round by the Miami Dolphins last year. In 2022, tight end Trey McBride was taken in the second round by the Arizona Cardinals.
