Opinion: Sandi Squicquero: Adversity promotes victory

Each of us celebrate Easter with our own traditions. In the Christian religion, Easter defines Christ’s victory over death.

The optimal word here is ” victory.” This word defines much of how Christians relate to the world around them.

What is your concept of victory in your life? In May 2008, a tornado destroyed many homes in Windsor, coming from the east and turning north, hitting many houses near Water Valley. It could have hit more of the town, and we could have lost many people, but it never did and we didn’t. Victory!

Before any victory there is a fight, the battle of our spirit and mind. The battle can take many forms, a call that leads to the bad news of cancer, an autoimmune disease, the loss of a loved one that you have spent your life with. “I am sorry but …” news, the loss of your retirement account because of bad management, a divorce that you did not wish for or want. Situations that left you asking ”why”?

You have no answers, you only have the hope that your life will go in another direction, and you will find a light at the end of the tunnel, not unlike Jesus, who, at the garden of Gethsemane, knowing that he would be crucified, fell on His face and prayed saying, “Oh my Father if it is possible, let this cup pass from me.” His story ends in resurrection and victory.

We give in and get ready for the fight. The cancer patient, the man who lost his retirement account who is depressed, the woman going through a divorce and the loss of a cherished dream. All of these people share emotions of sadness, anger and depression.

Turning the energy of these emotions into action that leads to victory requires mental discipline. At times you may become distracted, or experience doubt, remorse or feelings of failure. Refocus on your surroundings, not yourself, if there are any obstacles in the way, see around them and through them.

Guided imagery and positive affirmation lead to victory. Know who you are and what you want and visualize it. Visualize, or imagine yourself as the healthiest, happiest, most successful being possible.

Compare this picture with the actual picture of yourself as you are now. Are they identical? If so, congratulations, you have achieved your ultimate. If they are not, then you join the vast majority of us who still have some work to do on our lives.

We are what we think, and here are a few suggestions in forming accurate statements for healing that lead to victory:

    • All of our affirmations should be in the present tense.

    • All our affirmations need to be positive.

    • Our positive affirmations need to be powerful.

    • Make your affirmations brief, pointed and present.

    • Keep your affirmations personal.

We are all driven by energy and we are fighters. We want to be victorious over our life’s issues and problems, we want to thrive.

Victory over adversity signifies resilience and triumph in the face of challenges, often emphasizing the importance of prayer and faith. It is a journey of overcoming hurdles and stumbling blocks. It is a testament to inner strength that offers us the opportunity to grow.

Sometimes we have to take an inventory of ourselves to reveal our strengths and weaknesses. This leads us to a deeper understanding of ourselves, our problems and our capabilities. Experiencing adversity will perhaps make us appreciate what we have. It’s one of life’s lessons.

Find your purpose, and you will find a sense of meaning and direction. Look and find a solution and take charge. Perhaps the lesson of the cross is that faith can win victory over adversity. Happy Easter to all.
