High school football player injured after diving into ocean at Stinson Beach

LAFAYETTE, Calif. (KRON) -- A Bay Area varsity high school football player was seriously injured after he dove into the ocean at Stinson Beach last weekend.

Acalanes High School football player Amin Noroozi had just arrived at the beach with friends when he ran across the sand and dove into the ocean. Noroozi, 17, apparently struck a sandbar in shallow water, a family friend said.

"Amin was enjoying a sunny afternoon at the beach with friends. Then, in an unexpected instant, everything changed," a GoFundMe page states.

He was pulled out of the water and a doctor on the beach helped stabilize the teenager before Noroozi was airlifted to a hospital, a family friend said. Noroozi underwent hours of surgery for spinal chord injuries, the teen's mother told KRON4.

"Shoulders and triceps are very strong, but no sensation in his hands and completely paralyzed from the chest down," Noroozi's mother, Ofelia, said.

Doctors told Noroozi's family that they are not sure if he will be able to walk again.

His mother said it was difficult news to cope with, but the community in Lafayette has shown an "outpouring of love and support. It’s incredible."

On Wednesday afternoon, Acalanes High School held a fundraiser at its baseball game to help his family pay for medical bills. Ofelia was invited to the pitcher's mound to throw the first pitch.

Acalanes High School wrote on Instagram, "Amin Noroozi was involved in a serious accident. Today, tomorrow, & in coming weeks we will remind Amin and his family that the Acalanes community is behind them."

The GoFundMe page has raised more than $120,000 for ICU care, his helicopter transport from the beach, and long-term rehabilitation. The page writes, "(Noroozi) is now surrounded by a dedicated medical team and the love of his family and community. The journey ahead will be a challenge, but it’s also filled with hope. Every day, Amin shows strength, resilience, and a quiet determination that inspires everyone around him."
