Bishop Well emergency response demobilizes, moves into recovery phase

The emergency response at an oil and gas well near Galeton was demobilized as of Monday, according to Weld County, leaving regulatory agencies to manage responsibilities following the release of water, oil and gas from the well more than a week ago.

The county said in incident update email late Monday afternoon the agencies will coordinate and provide information to the public through the recovery phase. The agencies are: Weld County, Chevron, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Colorado Energy and Carbon Management Commission (ECMC).

About 6 p.m. April 6, an equipment failure led to the release of some water and oil and gas at the facility south of Weld County Road 74 known as the Bishop Well site, according to the Chevron Corporation.

Approximately 200 people gathered at a Galeton fire station last week for a community meeting on the well release.

Twelve Galeton residents were evacuated because of the release, and Galeton Elementary closed last week.

The school reopened Monday at Benjamin Eaton Elementary in Eaton. Galeton students and staff will be at Benjamin Eaton through the end of this week, according to the Galeton Elementary page on the Eaton School District website.

The school will provide transportation at regular pick up times. A shuttle bus from Galeton is located at Presbyterian Community Park on Grand View Avenue.

The Bishop Well Incident claims line phone number is: 877-359-1285. The well incident page on the Weld County website is www.weld.gov.
