Caleb Williams was unique before he was drafted by the Chicago Bears.
After enduring a 5-12 season as an NFL rookie, the former No. 1 overall draft pick became even more unique with a telling admission.
“When I got home, I got in my bed. I just dropped a few tears,” Williams told Esquire.
“I was just so beat-up mentally, physically, spiritually.”
It was a trying rookie season for Williams, who watched Matt Eberflus get fired as head coach while the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings spent the year as Super Bowl contenders in the same division.
Williams, who cried when he was drafted, completed 62.5 percent of his passes for 3,541 yards and 20 touchdowns.
But he was sacked 68 times and his 87.8 rating only produced five wins.
“I think those losses were pretty important for me and my growth,” Williams said.
“To go on a losing streak, to be in this position and be at the helm of it, was definitely important for me.
“Just being able to see how I need to be when times are bad.”
Chicago turned to Ben Johnson as the team’s new head coach, and Johnson got the best out of Jared Goff in Detroit.
Williams was a big supporter of Johnson, and the second-year QB plans to sharpen his edge in 2025.

“I don’t necessarily want to be friends, because I want to keep that competitive advantage,”
When NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe learned that Williams ‘cried’ after losses as a pro rookie, the postgame tears soon became a topic of discussion on his Nightcap podcast.
Longtime NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson said he was fine with Williams crying, but the young Bears QB must be more efficient and make better decisions on the field that lead to wins.
“We’ve seen him cry in the stands after after a USC game,” Johnson said.
“They won so much at USC. He was used to winning, and now coming to a structured environment at the highest level with the one percenters is not as easy as it was in college.
“You’re going to have your ups and downs. Now, the difference is, what he has to understand is, most of the wins are going to be in his hands — he can be responsible for them.”
Williams has been open in the past about painting his fingernails and being unafraid to show his emotions.
The Bears are hoping he can be the next Patrick Mahomes.
Chicago will accept occasional crying as long as Williams flips 5-12 to 12-5 with Johnson as head coach.
Williams’ chances for success in 2025 were boosted by a busy free agency period for the Bears.
His team also holds the No. 10 overall pick in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft, and picks 39 and 41 in the second round.
