Rory McIlroy has finally won the Masters, becoming just the sixth male golfer to accomplish a career Grand Slam of major championships.
Rory McIlroy’s quest for golfing immortality finally reached its conclusion at Augusta National, as the Northern Irishman won the 2025 Masters to become just the sixth male golfer in history to complete the career Grand Slam of major championships.
The Northern Irishman had to do it the hard way at Augusta National, with his final round of 73 seeing him card his highest score of the week as the pressure told in Georgia. But McIlroy calmed his nerves in the first Masters to be decided by a playoff since 2017 to clinch victory at the first hole over Justin Rose, who was also defeated on that occasion by Sergio Garcia.
McIlroy’s win made him only the third golfer this century to win the Masters after an over-par final round after Trevor Immelman in 2008 (the year before McIlroy made his debut at Augusta) and Hideki Matsuyama in 2021. The Japanese star enjoyed a more fruitful final 18 holes this time around, carding an equal best six-under alongside Rose to eventually finish in a tie for 21st.
But all the honour belongs to McIlroy this time around, who is the first male European golfer to achieve the career Grand Slam, adding to his 2011 US Open, 2012 & 2014 PGA Championship and 2014 Open Championship successes, joining Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods in an elite group of golfing greats.
Success came on McIlroy’s 17th Masters appearance, and 11th in pursuit of the career Grand Slam, with only Garcia having to wait longer his first Masters title having won the Green Jacket at the 19th attempt in 2017.
McIlroy now holds five major victories having last tasted success at the 2014 PGA Championship, making it a gap of 3,889 days between the two victories. It hasn’t been for the lack of trying though, he’s had 22 Top 10 finishes in major championships during that span, more than any golfer.
And to highlight his remarkable consistency on the biggest stage, his victory at Augusta brings his career tally to 32 top-10 finishes from 64 major appearances, a 50% strike rate that speaks to his enduring quality.
Among European golfers, McIlroy is the sixth to win five or more majors, but over the last 100 years only Nick Faldo (six) has more major championship victories than McIlroy. His achievement also elevates Northern Ireland into elite company; it’s now the fifth country to produce male winners of all four majors, joining the USA, England, South Africa and Australia.
The win also snapped a run of seven consecutive majors won by American golfers, with McIlroy the first non-American major winner since Jon Rahm at the 2023 Masters.
Among active golfers, only Woods (15) and Phil Mickelson (six) boast more major titles.
It took McIlroy 10 years and 8 months to move from four to five major successes, and he’ll be hoping it won’t be such a long wait this time around, with an emotional return to Royal Portrush, the course where he burst onto the world’s scene when he carded a course-record 61 at the age of 16, for the Open Championship awaiting in July.
Among active players, only Tiger Woods (15) and Phil Mickelson (six) have more major titles than McIlroy, who will now turn his attention to Royal Portrush in July. The Open Championship returns to the course where a 16-year-old McIlroy first stunned the golfing world with a record-breaking round of 61. It will be an emotional homecoming and a chance to build on a legacy that has finally reached legendary status.
