Political commentator Tucker Carlson and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) on Friday both praised New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani after his victory in the Democratic primary this week.
“That guy was the only person in the New York City mayor’s debate to say he wanted to focus on New York City. They were, all the candidates were asked if you could visit a foreign country, what would it be? And they all, of course, all had an answer. I think most said Israel,” Carlson said during the Friday episode of “The Tucker Carlson Show.”
“And he said, ‘I wouldn’t go anywhere. I’d stay in New York. And like, if I want to meet Jewish constituents, I go to their synagogues, their homes or whatever, but I’d be here in New York because that’s what I’m doing. I’m running New York. That’s my job,” the former Fox News host added about Mamdani's performance in the mayoral debate earlier this month.
Greene agreed with Carlson, stating that Mamdani gave the “right answer” and slammed former New York Gov. Anthony Cuomo (D), who ran in the mayoral primary, as a “dirty establishment Democrat” over his inability to address past sexual harassment allegations.
Both Greene and Carlson have knocked the administration over its involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict in recent days, highlighting divides in the MAGA world between those backing aggressive support for Israel and those concerned about U.S. getting pulled into a larger war.
Despite the praise for Mamdani, Greene and Carlson said they strongly oppose his policies. The mayoral candidate has pushed for free buses, free child care and rent freezes in the country’s largest city.
“I totally oppose his program…,” Carlson told viewers. "I don’t think it works, but he’s talking about economics and everyone else is talking about foreign policy. Why is it hard to talk about economics, domestic economics?”
Greene argued the topic was less discussed because, “apparently they don’t know how to fix it.”
Mamdani has welcomed Republican criticism from lawmakers and the president himself, who called him a “100% Communist Lunatic” over his policy platform.
“You know, this is not the first time that President Trump is going to comment on myself, and I encourage him — just like I encourage every New Yorker — to learn about my actual policies to make the city affordable,” Mamdani told ABC News’s Rachel Scott in an interview Wednesday.
