“The greatest leaders are not necessarily those who do the greatest things. They are often those who do small things in a great way to inspire others.” – John C. Maxwell
Honored
Bev Reeves used to live in Ukiah, wrote for the Ukiah Daily Journal and her husband, Tom, was publisher.
Bev was recently honored with the title “Elder Emeritus” in a ceremony, followed by a reception at First Christian Church of Loveland, CO. She was an Elder for more than 10 years, taught an adult Bible study 15 years, and sang in the choir 20 years. Now, Bev is no spring chicken, but she likes to stay active.
She studied Chinese, Mandarin language at Taishan International Studies, Taishan, China; studied Journalism at Colorado State University; studied English language at Southeast Missouri State University, Cape Girardeau, MO.
Bev was instrumental in launching my writing for the newspaper after she moved from Ukiah. Back then, we had a “Cook of the Week,” and many local feature stories.
She’s a kind, gentle, funny, capable human being and deserves many kudos for her volunteer work. Her son, Michael Reeves, born in Ukiah, now teaches at a school in Buda, Texas.
Columbia Scholastic Press Association announced Gold Circle winners last week and his school had 18 kids win a national award in all facets of newspaper production. Then Texas Association of Journalism Educators (TAJE) sent out the Best of Texas winners and Michael’s students had 24 kids win a total of 67 awards. Five students won more than five individual awards, with most of them being superior, the highest level. To top it off, this talented son of two newspaper folks was also chosen as the teacher of the month by his school’s Student Council.

Judge 85th in the world
In the 1970s, comedian Flip Wilson created a ridiculous character whose signature line was, “Here comes the judge!”
The Hon. Keith Faulder, the Mendocino County Presiding Judge 2025 of Superior Court, has always been an outstanding and upstanding fella, but now (wait for it…) he’s just finished the 2025 CrossFit open semifinals 85th in the world overall in his age group.
Unfortunately, he didn’t finish the last events because of a shoulder injury. He gave “thanks to Ferd and Tracy and CrossFit Firefly in Ukiah for getting me this far.”
100+ Women Strong
100+Women Strong Inland Mendocino is a grassroots initiative driven by volunteers and powered by the Community Foundation to inspire collective investment in the inland nonprofit community. The Community Foundation will not be involved in the decision-making process or the nominated organizations and is providing operational support only.
Each individual who has donated will vote for the winner, and one of the nonprofits will be awarded up to $10,000. Any surplus of donations will be split between the remaining two nonprofits!
Join others on Thursday, May 1 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Willits Senior Center and with your $100 donation. Vote on one of these three Spring 2025 nominees:
Community Defense Collective (Fiscally Sponsored by CASA); Grapevine Quilter’s Guild of Mendocino County; and Willits Community Theatre.
“Our giving circle is a way to magnify and focus our individual philanthropy by pooling funds with each other and making a collective decision. Each member contributes $100 twice per year,” explained organizers.
How it works: 100 members donate their $100 = $10,000; 150 members donate their $100 = $15,000; 200 members donate their $100 = $20,000.

VFW Breakfast in May
Ukiah area Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1900 (VFW) have been sponsoring a breakfast fundraiser for decades. The next one is the second Saturday in May – May 10, 2025, from 8 a.m. to noon at Veterans Memorial Hall, 293 Seminary Ave., Ukiah.
The Post cannot do it alone. For several breakfasts, Redwood Empire Lions Club volunteers have been catering the breakfast: Eggs, hash browns, biscuits, gravy, sausage, and a drink – not a bad deal for $10. Ukiah Elks CA Lodge No. 1728 has been contributing $500 per breakfast toward expenses.
COVID stopped many things, but these intrepid volunteers have persevered, opening up for the VFW Breakfasts quarterly: May, August, November and February – always the second Saturday.
Joel Greenfield is the current Commander of VFW Post 1900.
The proceeds go towards Veterans’ assistance. Funds raised also go to the many worthwhile projects the VFW supports, flowing back into the community in a variety of ways, including student scholarships.
TOPS – 77 years
Gail Walker called to remind readers that there is a great local group of folks who are back to meeting weekly for a common goal.
TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is the short name for TOPS Club, Inc., the original nonprofit, noncommercial network of weight-loss support groups and wellness education organization. TOPS offers tools and programs for healthy living and weight management, with exceptional group fellowship and recognition. Established in 1948 to champion weight-loss support and success, TOPS has helped millions of people live healthier lives.
Weekly meetings include private weigh-ins and professionally prepared, informational chapter programs, featuring up-to-date information on nutrition, exercise and healthy lifestyles. Programs provide positive reinforcement and motivation to adhere to food and exercise programs.
Locally, the only TOPS Club in Ukiah is seeking new members. They meet Tuesdays at Calvary Baptist Church, 465 Luce Ave. Weigh-in is 9 a.m., meeting (only 35 minutes) starts at 9:30 a.m. www.tops.org/
Gail has been a member of this group for more than seven years.
“Weight loss is no quick fix, it’s a slow process,” she explained. “Every meeting a program revolves around eating right, exercising, etc. We’re a nice group (this group has been active over 50 years).”
She said that there are great success stories of people who have lost a lot of weight and kept it off.
Janet Koehler has been a member of Ukiah TOPS since 2000.
“I like the friendly, encouraging time together. They are really a nice bunch of people. Currently only ladies are attending, but we’ve often had men, as well. The camaraderie makes the meetings fun.”
For more information about Ukiah TOPS, call Gail Walker at (707) 485-5413 or email Janet Koehler at [email protected].
