(KRON) -- Former San Jose City Councilman Omar Torres was convicted Tuesday of sexually molesting a minor in 1999. In a court appearance Tuesday, Torres, 43, pleaded no contest to charges of sex crimes with minors.
Torres was arrested on Nov. 5 last year and has been held in custody without bail ever since.
The disgraced former officials allegedly exchanged text messages with another man in which he said he's had oral sex with a 17-year-old. While Torres' attorney maintains the text messages were "outrageous fantasy and roleplay," additional allegations have since surfaced regarding Torres.
Charges have also been filed stemming from incidents that occurred between 1990 and 1999, when Torres allegedly raped a minor victim repeatedly, beginning when the victim has just 4-years-old.
“It is heartbreaking that someone elected to represent and serve thousands of San Jose residents had previously molested a small child,” District Attorney Jeff Rosen said. “Children are vulnerable and precious, and my Office will do everything in our legal power to fight for their safety and fully prosecute those who hurt them.”
On Tuesday Torres pleaded no contest to three charges of child sex abuse. He faces up to 24 years in prison and lifetime registration as a sex offender.
No date has yet been set for sentencing. Torres served on the San Jose City Council from 2023 to late 2024. He resigned from the council just hours before his arrest.
On Tuesday, a special election is being held to fill his former seat.
