Jon Scheyer met with reporters on Saturday night in San Antonio after Duke’s late collapse against Houston in the Final Four.
The Blue Devils led by as many as 14 points in this game, but Houston went on an 11-1 run over the last 1:14 of the game en route to a 70-67 victory. Duke made numerous mistakes in those final 74 seconds — errant passes, missed free throws and ill-advised fouls, to name a few.
In his postgame comments, Scheyer acknowledged some of those shortcomings.
“Frankly, the game, we did what we wanted to do,” Scheyer said. “I thought our guys followed the game plan, controlled the game, we had the lead for 35 minutes, winning by six with a minute 15 to go. They made plays. You got to give ’em a ton of credit. We didn’t make those plays.
“You go from some of the most special moments in the tournament to the most heartbreaking loss. I’m not about to feel sorry for one second. These guys have done an incredible job. It’s heartbreaking. It’s incredibly disappointing. There’s a lot of pain that comes with this. That’s what the tournament is all about. You’re an inch away from the national championship game.”
Scheyer also made sure to emphasize he was proud of what his team accomplished to this point in the season. The Blue Devils were largely led by a group of freshmen, including Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel, who were by Scheyer’s side during his postgame presser.
“But I could not be more proud of these two guys next to me,” Scheyer said. “We’ve done this thing differently. What they’ve done in 18 and 19 years old I couldn’t fathom doing. Just incredible.”
Scheyer will now go back to the drawing board, but without Flagg or Knueppel who appear to be NBA-bound this offseason. A 6th National Championship for Duke will have to wait at least one more year, but the Blue Devils may be in this position again next April with players like Cam Boozer, Cayden Boozer and Shelton Henderson already signed up for next season.
