Sai Sudharsan goes bonkers; confirms India debut in England and his batting position

Gujarat Titans (GT) young batter Sai Sudharsan has opened up about his batting position in Team India’s lineup for the upcoming five-match Test series against England. The left-handed batter also said he is not in a position to choose where he bats and is ready to play wherever Gautam Gambhir decides.

On Saturday, May 24, the BCCI revealed an 18-player squad for the upcoming five-Test series against England. Shubman Gill was named the new captain, with Rishabh Pant appointed as his deputy. The highly anticipated Test series between the two teams is set to commence at Leeds on June 20.

Sai Sudharsan has received his maiden call-up to India’s Test team. With the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Sudharsan is expected to be part of India’s revamped top-order lineup.

The southpaw usually opens for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy, but he is open to batting anywhere the team requires. He stated that representing the country is a “very big privilege for a cricketer.”

"Sir, I think playing for the country itself is a very big privilege for a cricketer. So I don't think I am in a position to choose where I want to play," Sudharsan said, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

I'll Be Mentally and Skillfully Ready for Any Opportunity - Sai Sudharsan

Sai Sudharsan said that he is prepared to bat wherever the coaching staff needs him. The young batter added that he will stay mentally and technically ready for any role. Sudharsan made it clear that he is willing to adapt to the team’s requirements without hesitation.

"Wherever the coaches tell me to play, I think I will be mentally and obviously skillfully, you know, try and be ready for the opportunity," Sudharsan stated.

"I have a lot of likings. I think I will have to be ready for whichever [position] the team gives me. I will be ready for that."

Karun Nair was recalled after a strong Ranji Trophy campaign with Vidarbha. The selectors have opted for a pace-heavy attack featuring Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, and Arshdeep Singh. Notably, the spin department will be led by Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav.

The India national cricket team will be aiming to end a long wait for a Test series win in England, having last tasted success there in 2007 under the leadership of legendary Rahul Dravid.
