McDonald's is officially shutting down all of its spinoff storefronts, otherwise known as CosMc's—news that is sure to bum out fans of the beverage forward restaurants.
CosMc's have been around for less than two years, with eight locations opening within that time. Now, only five remain, all of which will be shut down by the end of June, McDonald's announce on Friday, May 23, per ABC News.
One location existed near the company's headquarters in Chicago, while seven were established in Texas.
CosMc's was a pilot restaurant being tested by the fast food giant as a competitor for stores like Starbucks and Dutch Bros. It mostly offered a variety of sweet and sugary drinks, with just a handful of snack options on the menu, to cater to customers in the lull between mealtimes.
McDonald’s said the spinoff offered an opportunity to experiment with flavor profiles and technology, and was able to edit menu offerings quickly based on feedback from consumers.
Some of its unique menu items will soon migrate to McDonald's menu boards, though the company has yet to confirm which ones. Chairman and CEO Chris Kempczinski noted that many of CosMc’s drinks could prove to be too complex for their general operations, with options like a matcha iced latte, a turmeric spiced latte, a prickly pear-flavored slushy with popping candy on top and a frozen sour cherry energy drink currently on the menu, according to the publication.
