‘SNL’s Ego Nwodim Accidentally Makes Audience Cuss During Weekend Update

Some of the best comedy on Saturday Night Live happens when things don’t quite go as planned, and that is exactly what happened this week during Ego Nwodim’s Weekend Update bit. Now in her seventh season on the show, Nwodim rolls up to the Update desk as herself to talk about the White House’s decision not to have a comedian perform at the Correspondents Dinner. The reasoning behind this decision is that the White House Correspondents' Association hopes to avoid any political divisiveness a comedian’s jokes might bring in with them, but Ego starts selling herself for the job anyway. She thinks she has a foolproof plan — only talk about the food. The conceit of the bit is quite silly, as Nwodim slips into a stand-up comedian character named “Miss Eggy” who paces back and forth with a purse on her arm talking about life after 50 (she’s 37) and being a parent (she has no children). But the real funny pops out when this spoof of a stand-up character starts doing call-and-response work with the audience. “Miss Eggy don’t what?” She holds her mic out to the audience expecting no response, but when much of the crowd in unison responds “Play!” Ego seems genuinely surprised. “Y’all wasn’t supposed to know that,” she says breaking character. It doesn’t stop there, however. Later on in the bit, she tries out another call and response asking the crowd, “‘Cause these men ain’t what?” Much to the surprise of Ego and Weekend Update co-hosts Colin Jost and Micheal Che, the crowd responds, “Sh*t!” At least for the West Coast feed of the show, this was not caught by the censors in time, and the genuine shock of everyone on stage made it clear this was not supposed to happen. “We finna get fired for that!” she says through laughter as Jost and Che are rolling in the background. “Y’all gonna have to pay for that,” she jokes pointing at the audience, referring to any fines the show might incur from the FCC. “Lorne gonna be mad at y’all!”

Mistake or not, Nwodim continues to prove that she is one of the biggest components of SNL’s comedic backbone, and her showing on Saturday perfectly illustrates that even when things go off the rails she keeps the audience safe in her capable hands.
