Ian Eagle has been broadcasting for over 3 decades after graduating from Syracuse in 1990, and he drew Saturday’s Final Four assignment with CBS.
During his career, he’s become well-known by a generation of sports fans and, in particular, college basketball fans. He’s one of the voices fans hear every year when March Madness comes around, and he’s become one of the best sports broadcasters of his time.
But on Saturday night, during his call of the Final Four semifinals on CBS, it might not have been one of his most shining moments, to borrow a favorite March Madness phrase. Because after Florida had one of its best shining moments in its basketball program’s history, Eagle congratulated the Gators while using a pun that might not have been appropriate for the moment.
Or, we’ll say, it might not have qualified for the moment. After Florida finished off its latest comeback in a 79-73 victory over Auburn to play for its first national title since 2007, Eagle screamed the following:
“A return to national prominence for the Gators! Florida will play for the national title! And what Todd Golden and the Gators will be looking for now is a CHOMPionship.”
Here is Eagle’s call:

— Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) April 6, 2025The “chompionship” play on words with the Gators was a minor annoyance for Florida fans, who were probably too excited at the moment to even hear Eagle’s unfortunate play on words. Still, it was noteworthy because of the moment.
