Potomac Valley Short Course Age Group Championships

College Park, Maryland March 12-16, 2025 SCY (25 Yards) Full Meet Results

The annual Potomac Valley Age Group Championships meet saw a lot of fast swimming, including a NAG record. Outside of the record, there was even a new top time in the country this season. Kennedy Masten and Sara Young led the meet on the women’s side while Tyler Harris and Finn O’Shea led the men’s meet.

Kennedy Masten of Machine Aquatics swam six individual events and two relays, winning six golds, one silver, and one bronze. Over the course of the meet, she picked up three new top 10 times for 11-12 girls in all three backstroke events and number one times in two of them.

In the 50 backstroke, she swam 26.13 to maintain her position as the top time in the country. She went on to swim the event again at the NCSA Age Group Championships, where she swam 25.92 to increase the gap between her and the 2nd place finisher even further.

Her 100 backstroke was 55.70, which won the event but was also another number one time for her age group. With this time, Masten moves up to tie for 7th in the all-time rankings with Claire Curzan.

The 200 backstroke was her 3rd top 10 time, thanks to her 2:06.72 which moved her up to 2nd in the country. She went slightly faster at the NCSA Age Group Champs, coming in at 2:06.38 to lengthen the gap between her and 3rd place. There are still at least two seconds between Masten and the current top time holder Lauren Lonsdale, who is sitting at 2:04.21.

Sara Young from the Rockville Montgomery Swim Club also picked up three top ten times, but she ended up dropping in all of those events at the same NCSA Age Group Champs as Masten. Young started the meet with a new best time in the 500 freestyle, finishing in 5:06.64, which moved her to 3rd overall this season among 11-12 girls before she dropped to 5:05.99.

She went on to drop time and swim 2:10.83 in the 200 fly. This time was almost a four second drop from her previous best of 2:14.36. It would have moved her up to 10th in the nation, but she dropped another two seconds to swim 2:08.56 at NCSAs and jumped to 3rd.

Finally, she dropped about a second in the 100 fly to swim 58.71 and move into the 8th spot this season. She dropped another four tenths a week later to swim 58.30 and move into 3rd this country.

Tyler Harris, a 12-year-old out of the Mason Makos Swim Team, also earned three top-10 times in the country. In the 200 backstroke, he swam 1:59.98 to drop four-and-a-half seconds and move into 4th in the country this season.

In his 50 freestyle, he dropped into the 22 second range for the first time, finishing in 22.93 to win the event and jump into the 6th position in the 11-12 rankings.

Finally, his 100 backstroke was another top 10 event thanks to his one second drop from 56.55 to 55.66 moving him into 5th this season.

Finn O’Shea from NCAP swam 13 events, six individuals and seven relays, and he won a gold medal in all 13 of them.

In the 50 fly, O’Shea, swam a new personal best time of 23.10 to become the 4th fastest performer this season. He also picked up a new best time in the 100 free, dropping to 46.11 and moving into 6th in the season rankings before he went slightly faster at the Shamrock Showdown at the end of March to jump even higher into 4th.

He also went new personal bests in the 200 free (1:43.43), 50 back (24.13), 100 fly (51.08), 100 IM (53.62).
