SOME Americans have been getting checks in the mail over the past few weeks that aren’t their tax refunds.
The direct payment instead comes from a program that seeks to give cash back to those who are owed, and it was recently signed into law.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and the General Assembly took action to ensure the initiative, Money Match, returned unclaimed property to residents, per the state’s treasury website.
“Money Match is a new way for the Pennsylvania Treasury Department to return unclaimed property to its rightful owners!” the site noted.
“It’s a law that was supported unanimously by the General Assembly and signed into law by the Governor.”
“When [the] Treasury identifies people with unclaimed property that meets the law’s requirements, we will automatically return it to you!” it added.
The Pennsylvania Treasury Department also explained that it had conducted a “thorough identification and verification process” to determine which residents qualified, per a press release.
They would’ve had single-owner properties valued up to no more than $500.
Those who were eligible would’ve already gotten a letter notifying them that a payment was on its way in January.
THE REAL DEAL
Over the past month, the $500 cash has been arriving, and Treasurer Stacy Garrity has assured recipients that “it’s not a scam.”
“The treasury is going to send you this money that we located for you,” Garrity said in a previous announcement.
“Cash it. It’s not a scam. It’s your money.”
For the first round that went out recently, there were 7,380 total checks totaling $1.7 million.
The remaining will be sent quarterly, and the next round including 40,000 checks will go out in May.
So, Pennsylvanians should remain on the lookout.

FAST FUNDS
Some American families are also set to get $500 direct monthly payments until the end of the year.
It’s part of the Ohio Mothers Trust guaranteed income program, which is backed by nonprofits Motherful, RISE Together Innovation Institute, and UpTogether.
There were 32 mothers selected in December 2024 to start getting the funds.
Each qualified by being a single mother residing in the Columbus area with annual household income levels at or below 80% of the median.
US Census Bureau data revealed that to be capped out at $65,327.
The guaranteed income program seeks to “show that providing unconditional cash support to mothers can significantly boost the financial stability and overall well-being of families,” as Danielle Syndor, CEO of RISE Together, noted in a press release.
“Providing families with the resources they need is an investment in their future and the future health of our community,” Syndor continued.
Another $500 payment hit the bank accounts of some Americans recently as part of a life-saving program.
Similarly, an “unrestricted” new program also sent out $500 checks.
