Carnie Wilson Says Comments on Daughter Lola’s ‘American Idol’ Audition Are ‘Pissing Me Off’

Carnie Wilson is clapping back at the critics.

During a panel appearance at 90s Con in Hartford, Conn., on Sunday, March 30, the Wilson Phillips singer was asked about her 19-year-old daughter Lola Bonfiglio’s audition for American Idol.

On last week’s episode, the granddaughter of Beach Boys member Brian Wilson entered the audition room with her dad, Rob Bonfiglio, and when Lola was asked what she was going to sing, she pulled in her mom, Carnie, and her aunt, Wendy Wilson.

Reflecting on the experience, Carnie told 90s Con fans, “It was the scariest thing she ever has done. She was trembling with nerves, and she did great. I'm so proud of her, and they asked us to sing, you know, so we came and crashed the party. I don't think that Lionel [Richie] and Carrie Underwood and Luke [Bryan] knew we were gonna be with her, so that was fun. We love singing with Lola. We love singing with her, and she sings with us on tour sometimes, but you know she's an aspiring artist.”

Then Carnie went into full-on mom-mode to address her daughter’s critics head on. “I just wanna say that we're human, you know, and the internet can be so cruel, and the comments are really pissing me off, and I can't respond.”

Wendy chimed in, “That’s hard for Carnie!”

Carnie continued, “Would you encourage a doctor's son not to be a doctor? Would you ever say, ‘Don't be a doctor because your dad is a doctor’? Lola wants to be a singer, and they say these terrible things, and she was so hurt.”

Chynna Phillips, who was also on the panel alongside her band members, pointed out, “The majority of the comments were very supportive. I have to say because I read some, too, and I think that we need to recognize that.”

Carnie insisted, “The majority was not. But I just want people to understand that it's not all these happy glitter things for real people with real hearts and souls. I encourage her to do it because she loves to sing. I’m so proud of her that she was even brave enough to audition for it.”

AJ McLean, who joined the Wilson Phillips singers at 90s Con, quickly brought some humor to the panel. “Wait, so now I have to vote for her and for Baylee?” he asked, referring to fellow Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell’s son, Baylee Littrell, who also auditioned for Idol this season. “Oh well, don't tell Brian.”

Tune in to American Idol on Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC to see how Lola and Baylee do on the completion.
