Soleil Moon Frye has fond memories of her time on the 1980s sitcom Punky Brewster.
The 48-year-old actress, who played Penelope "Punky" Brewster on the popular television show, exclusively tells Parade at 90s Con in Hartford, Conn., that the “refrigerator episode” (which was actually titled “Cherie Lifesaver”) is often brought up to her by fans.
“It was so beautiful — yesterday [at 90s Con], there was a gentleman who had seen that episode and then became a nurse [because of it],” Frye says. “It was so amazing, and one of the reasons I love being here so much is you hear the most exquisite stories.”

In the episode, which aired in January 1986, Cherie (Cherie Johnson) becomes trapped in an refrigerator during a game of hide-and-seek and nearly suffocates. She’s saved by Punky and Margaux (Ami Foster), who perform CPR on her to save her life.
Frye tells Parade that “it was actually a kid who wrote in the idea for that episode, so it was really amazing.”
She explains, “Many of the episodes were based off of things that were happening in our lives, which was really interesting.”

As for growing up on the set of Punky Brewster, Frye says, “I have so many happy memories. We had an incredible time, and it was really a playground for us in so many ways. We were pogo-sticking and taking our scooters and running around and really able to also be kids [in] this incredible magical place that was where we were doing Punky, which was amazing.”
Punky Brewster ran for four seasons from 1984-1988. A revival series, starring Frye and Johnson, premiered on Feb. 25, 2021, and aired for one season.
90s Con is taking place March 28-30 at the Connecticut Convention Center.
