Arizona’s Caleb Love looks forward to Sweet 16, another showdown with Duke

Caleb Love and the Arizona Wildcats will seek revenge on Thursday in the Sweet 16 when the two schools square off for the second time this season.

The rematch comes after Arizona lost 69-55 to Duke in an early season affair in November at McKale Center, a game that saw the Wildcats shoot 6-of-23 (26.1%) from three, including a 1-of-9 (11.1%) mark from Love. In that game, Love shot 3 of 13 (23%) overall and finished with eight points.

The former North Carolina transfer has played the Blue Devils nine times previously in his career which has produced mixed results. Seven of those meetings came when Love played his first three seasons at North Carolina and the last two meetings came with Love a member of the Wildcats.

Love’s team has won five of those matchups and lost four, with the most recent win coming when Arizona beat Duke 78-73 at Cameron Indoor Stadium in 2023.

Love has averaged 15.9 points, 4.2 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 0.7 steals during those nine contests, while shooting 37.6% from the field and 26.7% from three.

Love’s most famous encounter against Duke came during the Final Four of the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

Playing for North Carolina, Love hit a 3-pointer in the final 30 seconds of the one-point game to take the Tar Heels to the title game and end Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski’s career. Love played 40 minutes in the 81-77 win and had 28 points, shooting 11 of 20 from the field and 3 of 10 from three.

What did Caleb Love say about facing Duke?

Fresh off a Round of 32 victory against Oregon on Sunday, sideline reporter Andy Katz asked Love about what it would take to defeat the Blue Devils. The Arizona star first hesitated and later smirked before answering Katz with a muted response.

    “We’ll be ready for them.”

Love was later asked about Duke in the postgame press conference.

“It’s a big matchup because it’s the next game,” Love told reporters.

“It’s the only game that matters. Obviously, our mind was focused on Oregon and we got it done, and now we’re going to get in the film room and lock in on Duke and what they do. Obviously, they’re a great team, they’re well coached, and we’ll be ready for ‘em when the time comes.”
