KIRK Cousins has made a big decision over his Atlanta Falcons contract after last year’s shocker.
Cousins, 36, agreed a four-year deal worth $180 million with the Falcons last spring.
He looked set to be the team’s franchise quarterback after the mega move from the Minnesota Vikings.
Atlanta then shocked the world when they took a quarterback with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Falcons selected Michael Penix Jr apparently without any prior warning to Cousins.
Cousins was the starter for the majority of the season before Penix took over on December 22.
The 36-year-old has a no-trade clause in his contract.
That means he must be on board with any potential move the Atlanta Falcons want to make.
According to Pro Football Talk, he will wait until after the NFL Draft to make a decision on potentially waiving the clause.
Cousins wants to avoid a repeat of last year’s scenario.
The quarterback doesn’t want to be traded to another team, only for them to draft a quarterback.
The NFL Draft takes place in Green Bay, Wisconsin from April 24-26.
Cousins wants to compete for a job as starting quarterback and not be a veteran backup.
The Atlanta Falcons have already indicated that Cousins will be their backup if he returns to the franchise in 2025.
That’s despite him being paid an average of $45 million a year on his current contract.
“When you do that, you expect to get high-level quarterback play for two seasons,” Atlanta Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot said.
“We understand that that didn’t happen.
“We planned to have that cap allocation at that position with Cousins as the starter.
“Now, it’s been flipped and he’s the backup and, obviously, Mike is the starter and we believe we are going to get high-level quarterback play.
“We are comfortable where we are and we have to make sure we be creative and find ways to build this team the right way.”
Cousins has been in the league since 2012 when he was selected by Washington.
His best years came in Minnesota from 2018 to 2023, which earned him a huge Atlanta deal.
Cousins has been tho the Pro Bowl four times during his career.
