PM hopes for a new, friendly era between London and Brussels

The price of today’s big Brexit reset on food and drink is that Britain will have to accept EU rules on food safety and animal welfare.

Cries of surrender will resonate with some pro-Brexit voters.

“Dynamic alignment” of rules is a totemic issue, and triggers angst that such limited deals mean re-entry via the back door – and without Britain getting a say on how those very rules are created.

However, given the mess Brexit’s architects made after 2016, this agreement has the potential to reignite trade with Europe, without locking London and Brussels together in perpetuity.

This is the penalty that “purist” Brexit leaders are paying after fumbling the delivery of their project.

As for Keir Starmer, he hopes for three wins from a new deal on food: help with supermarket prices; a boost to some British exports and the jobs they support; and finally a change in mindset – nudging the UK to once again look outwards after nine years of internal turbulence.

Yet the move carries great peril for the Prime Minister, already under fire on winter fuel, welfare cuts and the mirage of economic growth.

Expect him to take pelters on sovereignty. Especially if he concedes fishing grounds, giving European fleets long-term access to British waters.

So this is a big gamble, entirely reliant on being able to show the fruits (sometimes literally) of closer trade on food and drink, before the next election in 2029. Fail and Nigel Farage’s Reform can prosper.
