UNC men’s basketball fans have flocked to Milwaukee to support the Tar Heels in the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament this weekend.
It’s a rare trip to Wisconsin for the Carolina fanbase – UNC hasn’t played a game in the state since 1986. And if you’re not sure what to do when not watching the Tar Heels on the hardwood, here’s a quick rundown of what Milwaukee has to offer.
Friday’s game is a homecoming for one Tar Heel in particular. Seth Trimble hails from the Milwaukee suburb of Menomonee Falls. Trimble starred for Menomonee Falls High School and was named Wisconsin’s Mr. Basketball before coming to Chapel Hill. And his is a double family connection: Trimble’s older brother J.P. Tokoto also played at UNC from 2012 through 2015 and was another Menonomee Falls High School standout.
“This is God’s blessing,” Trimble said of coming home. “I was literally talking about this with my dad… ‘Man, what if we get a bid to Milwaukee? Wouldn’t that be crazy?’ And just look how it all worked out.”

UNC’s most recent game in the state of Wisconsin was not very recent at all: the Tar Heels faced Marquette at Milwaukee’s Mecca Arena on January 19, 1986 – just one day after Carolina had opened the Dean Smith Center with a win against rival Duke. The Tar Heels shook off their jet lag and won, 66-64. And if you want to check out the site of that win, it’s still in use by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as its home arena. The building is just steps away from Fiserv Forum, home of the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks and the site of UNC’s game against Ole Miss.
Tar Heel fans of a certain age may cringe when they think of Marquette, though. Though Marquette fell to UNC in 1986, it got the better of Carolina in the two teams’ most famous meeting: the 1977 NCAA championship game, when Al McGuire’s Warriors denied UNC legends Phil Ford and Dean Smith a national title. The Marquette University campus is located just southwest of downtown Milwaukee.
There’s another Tar Heel connection to Milwaukee, but it’s not on the basketball court. B.J. Surhoff, arguably the greatest player in the history of the UNC baseball program, was selected first overall in the 1985 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers and played nine seasons with the “Brew Crew” as part of a 19-year major-league career. Surhoff’s old stomping grounds don’t exist anymore, as the Brewers moved into American Family Field (then known as Miller Park) in 2001, but the organization has honored the Diamond Heel legend on its Wall of Honor. The ballpark is located west of downtown Milwaukee along Interstate 94.
But even if you aren’t in Milwaukee with the Tar Heels, you can still follow along as they compete in the NCAA Tournament! Check out our broadcast information here.
