Responding to a range of concerns about the future, U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet had a consistent message: keep fighting.
Bennet hosted a town hall Tuesday afternoon in a ballroom at the University of Northern Colorado campus in Greeley, with other stops this week in Golden and Colorado Springs. Fellow Democrats U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York will host another event on the UNC campus Friday at Bank of Colorado Arena.
People gathered on Tuesday had many fears about what’s ahead and asked how people can make their voices heard.
Many expressed concerns about reports of potential cuts to Medicare and Medicaid — which President Donald Trump has repeatedly said his administration won’t do. But Bennet, who referred to Trump as an agent of chaos during the town hall, believes those concerns are warranted.
“At the end of the day, I have no confidence that Donald Trump isn’t going to cut Medicaid itself,” Bennet said. “I think we’re going to have very, very tough choices to make when we’re dealing with it.”
Other attendees asked about immigration, which affects 9.8% of all Coloradans.
As Bennet listened to constituents’ issues, he promised some he would address their issues personally. One such promise was for a trio of children who said their mother was denied a visa and whose American-born father was stuck with her in Nicaragua.
The eldest sibling, whom the Tribune is not naming because she’s a minor, told Bennet her mother has already raised nine children in the country, including one who serves in the U.S. Navy. The woman’s daughter added that her mother has no criminal record.
“We spend a lot of time on immigration cases, and some of those cases are really tough and are probably going to be tougher now,” Bennet said. “But with your dad being an American citizen, we can probably do something with that.”
In addition to informing attendees, Bennet showed a desire to instill hope for the future.
“We fight. That is what we have to do,” Bennet said to the attendees. “We do that by teaching our kids about the history of the United States of America, and you need to tell them that history. That’s something you can do, and it may not sound important, but I think it’s critically important.”
Bennet energized the participants, encouraging everyone to get involved if they want change. He also encouraged parents to educate their children on American history and the meaning and values in the U.S. Constitution.
“We’re not living up to the words of the Constitution,” he said. “You can see the power in being able to claim that, and in this moment, that’s a power we need to be able to claim.”
