The future of Apple Inc.'s iPhone sales appears precarious as analysts anticipate a decline in revenue due to various factors, including delayed feature enhancements such as Siri . The first quarter of 2025 has already shown a slight decrease in iPhone revenue year-over-year, raising concerns among investors and stakeholders . Despite these challenges, there is optimism surrounding Apple's entry into the foldable smartphone market with the anticipated launch of its first foldable device in 2026. This innovation is expected to revitalize sales and capture consumer interest in a competitive landscape dominated by rivals like Samsung and Google.
According to a Chinese leaker known as Phone Chip Expert (via MacRumors), Apple has been pulling out all the stops to increase the efficiency of its foldable display. That could give it an edge against the best foldable phones in what is a highly competitive market.
To achieve this, Phone Chip Expert claims that Apple has reduced the display driver integrated circuit from 28nm to 16nm. That’s a massive reduction and could significantly impact battery life.
The Weibo user has a number of accurate previous claims, including that the iPhone 7 would be water-resistant, the standard iPhone 14 models would continue using the A15 Bionic chip (with the more advanced A16 chip being exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro models), and Apple would build servers to support Apple Intelligence using Apple Silicon hardware. These predictions were later corroborated by multiple credible sources and subsequently proven to be correct.
Earlier this month, Ming-Chi Kuo reported that the first foldable iPhone coming in 2026 might cost more than $2,000. The device will be sold as an even more premium version of the iPhone, with a 7.8-inch main screen and a 5.5-inch external display. The device will look like an iPad mini when unfolded.
Apple is also working on a foldable device with an 18-inch screen, which could end up becoming a new Mac or iPad. The company aims to create foldable devices with an invisible crease.
Analysts predict that the foldable iPhone will debut at a premium price point exceeding $2,000 (Rossignol, 2025), which could limit its accessibility but also signify Apple's commitment to high-quality products. Features such as a dual-camera system and advanced display technologies are projected to enhance user experience significantly . If Apple successfully meets quality expectations with this new offering, it may not only offset declining sales but also establish a strong foothold in an emerging market segment. Ultimately, the success of Apple's first foldable device could be pivotal in reversing current trends and driving future growth.
