Trump Administration Releases New JFK Assassination Files, But Revelations Remain Scarce

The release of new JFK assassination files by the Trump administration marks a significant moment in the ongoing quest for transparency regarding one of America’s most scrutinized historical events. The unredacted documents, which include over 1,100 files and approximately 31,000 pages, were made available online as part of fulfilling a prior declassification order . President Trump had previously suggested that these documents would contain shocking revelations; however, initial assessments indicate that they have not significantly altered the established narrative surrounding the assassination .

The archives uploaded about 63,000 pages of documents on its website in two initial tranches, with more files to be posted online as they are digitised.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, led by Tulsi Gabbard, said the release consisted of approximately 80,000 pages of previously classified records.

From what he reviewed, there isn’t anything to change the current conclusion of Kennedy’s assassination: that a lone gunman, Lee Harvey Oswald, was responsible for his death.

“The collection of records that we reviewed, the vast majority of which were released — some were kept classified in whole or in part — if that’s what we’re talking about, then there is no smoking gun,” he told CNN in a phone interview.

“If there had been anything that cut to the core of the assassination, the Review Board would have released it in the mid-’90s. So there is a sense of what the records are,” he went on.

In 2017, during Trump’s first term, he released 2,800 files regarding JFK’s death but did not release hundreds of others which were pending review, under pressure from the Central Intelligence Agency and the FBI. In 2023, former President Joe Biden released about 17,000 more documents.

Despite the high expectations associated with this release, experts remain skeptical about its potential to provide groundbreaking insights. Most of the National Archives' collection related to the JFK assassination comprises over six million pages, many of which are already public . Consequently, while historians and researchers may continue to comb through these newly accessible files in hopes of uncovering valuable information, it appears that substantial revelations may remain elusive. The continued interest surrounding JFK's assassination underscores both its historical significance and the enduring questions it raises about transparency and governmental accountability.
