BILL BELICHICK has had a major boost after recruiting a four-star defensive tackle for North Carolina.
Trashawn Ruffin, number 238 in the ESPN Junior 300, had committed to go to Texas A&M since October last year.

— Trashawn Ruffin (@TrashawnRuffin) March 9, 2025But Ruffin, the 12th-ranked prospect from North Carolina, has flipped his commitment to represent a college in his home state.
Ruffin, who is 6-foot-3 and weighs 305 pounds is now the number one prospect for the Tar Heels’ incoming class, which will be Belichick’s first full recruitment cycle in college football.
Belichick left the New England Patriots two years ago after a 23-year spell in charge in which he led the team to unprecedented success.
The Patriots, who had never previously won the Super Bowl, would become six-time champions under Belichick’s leadership.
And in December, he was announced as head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels – the first time the 72-year-old had ever taken charge of a college football team.
Upon joining, Belichick said: “I am excited for the opportunity at UNC Chapel Hill.
“I grew up around college football with my dad and treasured those times.
“I have always wanted to coach in college and now I look forward to building the football program on Chapel Hill.”
Belichick, who was born in Nashville, Tennessee, already had ties to North Carolina before taking up the job.
His father Steve was an assistant coach for the Tar Heels from 1953 to 1955 before going on to be assistant coach with the United States Naval Academy for three decades.
Belichick is reported to earn a huge $10m per year with some staggering performance-related bonuses.
These are said to include $150,000 for an eight-win regular season with a further $50,000 for each game won on top.
Making the 12-team College Football Play-off would reportedly give Belichick an additional $750,000.
He would then reportedly be in for an extra $1m if he reaches the quarter-final and $250,000 more for each game won.
And should the Tar Heels win the National Championship, he would rake in a massive $1.75m bonus.
North Carolina are currently 13-7 and sit in sixth position in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Chancellor Lee H. Roberts said on signing Belichick: “This is an exciting day for Carolina football and our University.
“Carolina is committed to excellence and to creating an opportunity to succeed in everything we do, from the classroom to the field of competition.
“I know after speaking with Coach Belichick that he shares that commitment.
“His legacy speaks for itself, and we look forward to working together on the next chapter of Carolina football.”
Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham said: “We know that college athletics is changing, and those changes require new and innovative thinking.
“Bill Belichick is a football legend, and hiring him to lead our program represents a new approach that will ensure Carolina football can evolve, compete and win — today and in the future.
“At Carolina, we believe in providing championship opportunities and the best experience possible for our student-athletes, and Coach Belichick shares that commitment.
“We are excited to welcome him to Chapel Hill.”
