Why Add Beer to Boxed Cake Mix?

Recently, I’ve tried the three-ingredient beer bread that the internet swears by which hinges on a can of beer. As it turns out, the same boozy magic works wonders in dessert form since the malty richness of Guinness deepens and complements the chocolate flavor.

Ditching the usual eggs, oil and water renders a cake that tastes way more sophisticated than what you with get with the instructions on the back of the box. Much like adding a can of soda to the mix, the carbonation from the beer helps aerate the batter, creating a light yet moist crumb. This cake is anything but dry.

Take a can of Guinness and measure out 12 ounces, or about 1 1/2 cups. Pour the beer into a mixing bowl and dump in the contents of one chocolate cake mix. I opted for a Devil's Food cake mix since I wanted optimal chocolate flavor. Stir until the batter is just combined. Pour into a baking pan and make as directed on the box. Frost with your favorite frosting nd serve.

My Honest Thoughts About the Beer and Boxed Cake Mix Hack

According to one Redditor, this cake tastes like "decadent chocolate heaven" and I have to fully agree. As these baked up, my whole house smelled like the best parts of a bakery mixed with a cozy pub—rich dark chocolate mingling with deep, toasty stout. And the pot gold of at the end of the rainbow? A cake that was somehow fudgier, more tender and infused with just the right amount of stout bitterness at the end of each bite to balance out the chocolatey sweetness.

I opted to make cupcakes over a whole cake, since they're easier to transport to St. Paddy's Day festivities. The texture of the cakes was a little stickier than your typical cake, but it was hardly gummy or dry. This two-ingredient Guinness chocolate cake hack was absolution perfection and I highly encourage you give it a try.
