Joe Biden's children have always been at the center of his life.
Biden is a father of four children: Beau Biden, Hunter Biden and Naomi Biden with his late first wife, Neilia, and Ashley Biden with wife Dr. Jill Biden. Beau and Naomi are deceased.
Joe has addressed the importance of his family numerous times, including in a memorable 2015 commencement speech at Yale when he was vice president.
"Six weeks after my election, my whole world was altered forever. While I was in Washington hiring staff, I got a phone call. My wife and three children were Christmas shopping, a tractor trailer broadsided them and killed my wife and killed my daughter. And they weren't sure that my sons would live," he said (via the Washington Post).
"Many people have gone through things like that. But because I had the incredible good fortune of an extended family, grounded in love and loyalty, imbued with a sense of obligation imparted to each of us, I not only got help. But by focusing on my sons, I found my redemption," he continued. "The incredible bond I have with my children is the gift I'm not sure I would have had, had I not been through what I went through."
Ashley previously gushed about her dad's family values to TODAY, noting, "Dad is so empathetic and has the ability to recognize pain, to feel others' pain and to comfort. We have a rule still today that no matter where dad is, no matter what meeting he's in, if one of the kids call, you have to let him know."

Born Feb. 3, 1969, Joseph "Beau" Robinette Biden III, known as Beau Biden, is the eldest child of the former president and his first wife, Neilia.
Beau was injured in the car accident that killed his mother and younger sister Naomi, but recovered fully. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991, then got his law degree from Syracuse University. He worked as an in-house counsel to the Justice Department's Philadelphia Office of Policy Development, then as a prosecutor.
Beau married Hallie Olivere Biden in 2002. They shared daughter Natalie and son Robert "Hunter" Biden II.
In 2003, Beau enlisted in the Delaware Army National Guard. In 2006, he was elected attorney general of Delaware, then served a tour of Iraq from 2008 through 2009. Beau was re-elected in 2010, serving two more terms as attorney general. He declined running for re-election for a third term to make room for a potential gubernational run, the New York Times reported.
Beau suffered a stroke in 2010 and was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2013, eventually succumbing to the disease in May 2015.
"It is with broken hearts that Hallie, Hunter, Ashley, Jill and I announce the passing of our husband, brother and son, Beau, after he battled brain cancer with the same integrity, courage and strength he demonstrated every day of his life," Joe Biden, then vice president, said in a statement at the time. "In the words of the Biden family: Beau Biden was, quite simply, the finest man any of us have ever known."
In 2017, Joe published the book Promise Me, Dad about his final conversations Beau, who he wrote wanted him to run for president.

Robert Hunter Biden
Joe Biden's second-born child is son Robert Hunter Biden, known as Hunter Biden. Hunter was born Feb. 4, 1970, and, like Beau, was injured in the crash that killed his mother and younger sister.
Hunter graduated from Georgetown University in 1992 and married his first wife, Kathleen Buhle, a year later. They share three daughters: Naomi (named after his late sister), Finnegan and Maisy.
Hunter attended Yale Law School, graduating in 1996. After getting his law degree, he became a lobbyist and also worked in private equity, including for a bank holding company called MBNA, which was a major donor to Joe Biden's campaigns, according to the New Yorker.
A public affairs officer in the Naval Reserve, Hunter was commissioned to serve in January 2014 and dismissed a month later when he tested positive for cocaine.
Hunter and Buhle separated in 2015, PEOPLE reported. He confirmed to Page Six in March 2017 that he was in a relationship with Beau's widow Hallie; Hunter's divorce from Buhle was finalized in 2017. In 2018, he fathered a daughter, Navy Joan Roberts, with Lunden Roberts. In May 2019, just days after meeting, he married Melissa Cohen. Hunter and Cohen welcomed son Beau in March 2020.
ABC News reported that investigators began looking into Hunter Biden as early as 2018 for various allegations, including his work with a Ukrainian natural gas company and a found laptop belonging to him, but nothing really stuck. That is, until June 2023, when Hunter was federally charged with misdemeanor failing to pay federal income tax and felony illegal weapon possession. The weapon possession charge stemmed from a gun purchase Hunter made when he was allegedly using drugs, which prosecutors claimed he lied about on the purchasing form.
A year later, Hunter was found guilty of three charges in the federal gun case, and that September, he pleaded guilty to all counts in the federal tax case. Though he faced up to 25 years in prison and a $750,000 fine, he ended up not having to worry about any of it: Joe Biden issued a full and unconditional pardon of his surviving son in December 2024.
"Here’s the truth: I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice—and once I made this decision this weekend, there was no sense in delaying it further," the then-president said in part in a statement at the time. "I hope Americans will understand why a father and a President would come to this decision."
Hunter said in a statement of his own (via NPR), "I have admitted and taken responsibility for my mistakes during the darkest days of my addiction—mistakes that have been exploited to publicly humiliate and shame me and my family for political sport. Despite all of this, I have maintained my sobriety for more than five years because of my deep faith and the unwavering love and support of my family and friends. In the throes of addiction, I squandered many opportunities and advantages. In recovery we can be given the opportunity to make amends where possible and rebuild our lives if we never take for granted the mercy that we have been afforded."
"I will never take the clemency I have been given today for granted and will devote the life I have rebuilt to helping those who are still sick and suffering," he concluded.

Joe Biden's only daughter with his late first wife, Neilia, Naomi Christina Biden was born Nov. 8, 1971, and was just over a year old when she and Neilia died in a car crash.
According to theNewark Post, Neilia was driving with Beau, Hunter and Naomi to find a Christmas tree in December 1972 when Neilia drove into the path of a tractor-trailer. Neilia, Naomi, Beau and Hunter were all hospitalized, but Neilia and Naomi didn't survive. Police determined at the time of the crash that Neilia didn't see the truck and that she may have had her head turned. The truck driver, Curtis C. Dunn, overturned his own vehicle while swerving to avoid a collision, and tried to immediately aid the Bidens until emergency services arrived.
Joe Biden has alluded to the truck driver being drunk at the time of the crash, a claim that was entirely unfounded.
