Whether you're trying to launch a new business, make an impact on your company's goals or start a TikTok account to influence others, it's common to hear many voices sharing different opinions, tactics and ideas on how to be successful.
While some of the tips and guidance may come from a positive place, it doesn't always mean the suggestions are the only way to do something.
Jenna Kutcher, the host of The Goal Digger Podcast, knows this all to well. After all, "5 Pieces of Bad Business Advice I’m Glad I Didn’t Take," is the title of a recent episode. And from covering relatable scenarios around social media presence, doing favors for others, work-life balance and more, she's made it clear that there's not a "one size fits all" model to achieve progress or prosperity in your own life.

During the March 12 episode, Kutcher talked about all five pieces of advice she's glad she didn't take—but ignoring one of them, in particular, actually helped her pay off her mortgage. What piece of advice was that? "Stick to one thing and master it."
In a corresponding blog, she wrote, "At first, I kind of agreed with this one. When I started as a photographer, I niched down to weddings, which helped me establish myself in the industry. I knew that being an 'everything' photographer wouldn’t serve me, so I focused entirely on weddings. That clarity helped me grow fast, but after a few years, I felt the pull to explore something new."
If Kutcher would've viewed "sticking to one thing" as permanent advice, she never would have experienced the unexpected benefits of stepping outside the box.
"I started a watercolor print shop on Etsy, just for fun," she continued. "To my surprise, it actually paid my mortgage!"

And it paid off in more ways than one.
"That was the moment I realized that just because you start with one thing doesn’t mean you’re stuck there forever," she wrote about her mindset change. "Being multi-passionate isn’t a flaw, it’s an asset."
She continued, writing, "Mastering one thing first gives you the foundation to expand later. You don’t have to box yourself into one identity forever. When you’re solid in one space, you earn the ability to explore new things."
