UC San Diego has now learned its fate for the Big West tournament semifinals, and it is a matchup against UC Santa Barbara. The Guachos are 2-0 so far in the tournament, after close victories over both Cal State Bakersfield Wednesday and Cal State Northridge Thursday.
The Tritons will have had five full days off in between its regular season finale against UC Davis and its semifinal matchup, so they are more than rested for the tournament in Las Vegas. The Guachos will be playing its third game in as many days.
After a 28-4 regular season, UC San Diego didn’t suffer many losses, and the two games against UC Santa Barbara were no exception. The Tritons won both games in the regular season, 84-76 on the road on Dec. 5 and 77-63 at home on Jan. 23.
As he has all season, Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones led the team in scoring in both the victories, with 22 points on Dec. 5 and 25 points on Jan. 23.
According to ESPN’s Bracketology by Joe Lunardi, the Tritons are on track to finish as a 12 seed and are currently slotted to face the five seed Oregon Ducks in Seattle. Many things could change, including the Ducks’ remaining schedule for its Big 10 tournament.
Will rust play a factor for the Tritons, or will the regular season results rear its head once again for the Guachos?
